CP: Poison in Stanton Park?
The City Paper investigates reports of rat poison in Stanton Park. The District says any rat poison found did not come from them, and an entomologist dispatched by the District to inspect the park found no poison, but did say he found small blue-green cylindrical fruits (from close by ornamental trees) that sort of look like pellet rat poison. A possible solution (let's hope it's correct), but I'd exercise caution anyway for the time being. After all, someone did collect the pellets, so those fruits would need to look A LOT like rat poison.

I'm the one who last Sunday found the small yellow bag of d-CON rat poison at Stanton Park, next to one of the four benches on the 6th Street side of the park. Near another bench over there I found and swept up a couple cup-fulls of blueish-green pellets on the sidewalk and in the grass identical to those spilling out of the d-CON bag. At least two other people found evidence of rat poison, one of them found an empty box of it.
I called the Park Police that day to alert them to the situation. It's my understanding that several NPS employees have searched the bushes and the park and haven't found anything else.
Everyone should keep an eye out in Stanton Park. Whatever the reason for someone leaving rat poison there, it's dangerous -- especially for children and dogs.
Tamara,
thanks for chiming in. That tree fruit sounded a bit too good to be true. You might want to contact Rend Smith of the City Paper. I'm sure he'd want to hear more.
I just e-mailed the reporter.
Yes, I don't know what the city employee found or where he found it.
The bag I picked up said "d-CON" not Jujubes or some other candy. And the pellets most definitely were not candy. A couple of friends helped with the clean up.
Tamara,
Did have a chance to take any pictures?
I would never condon poison, but is there a legal off leash area in Stanton Park? I could imagine how someone could get fed up with the giant piles of poop in the gabage cans and the all the unleashed dogs runnning around ruining the grass. You can't even sit on the grass in any of the big parks on the hill for fear of sitting on poop or because there is not grass left to sit on.

There's your culprit.
