I don't know if a two-star review qualifies as "awesome", but I think the review is accurate: Ethiopic is well-intentioned and a place with definite potential. The food, itself, is pretty darn good.
Overall, you'll be happy with your experience there as long as you overlook some minor kinks.
Actually, a two-star review is pretty good. Sietsma, like most restaurant critics, doesn't use a system where 1 star = poor. You have to be fairly good just to get a star at all.
To follow up re: two stars, Sietsma gives L'Auberge Chez Francois two stars, and Restaurant Nora one and a half stars. You have to be good just to get stars at all. A two-star review is a good review.
I'll agree with him on the food and decor, but disagree with the stars and the service!
I found the service to be fantastic when I ate there. Not 5-star-black-tie-fantastic, but definitely appropriate to the character of the restaurant. I went only a few days after the place opened, and was impressed by the quality and seamlessness of the service, especially in light of the fact that the owners apparently had no prior experience! The Biergarden Haus owners could definitely take a few hints.
Ethiopic is a fantastic addition to our neighborhood, and I hope to see them stick around for a long time to come.
The one gripe I'll agree with is that the tables were indeed a bit too small.

Well, the stars weren't outstanding, but the review was very good overall. The stuff the reviewer mentioned as problematic is pretty easy to fix.
Yuck, that awful Atlas District moniker again. Can someone that knows Tom personally smack him around?
Great photo of a really lovely couple. Did you take that, inked?
Two stars is a very good rating from Sietsema and it is rare for him to give somewhere more than that. Here's how he describes two stars:
** Good
Restaurants with generally appealing cooking, service and settings; they tend to be worth driving across town for.
That was the longest review of my life. Was he paid by the word?

aside from the fact that all of h wasn't in mind for "the atlas district" what do you find objectionable in the name?
