More on the Shootings in the Market

Here's further coverage from tv local police stations. Apparently someone robbed a family owned wholesale shop (Lida Wholesale) that sold t-shirts, and touristy items. During the robbery the one of the victims challenged the gunmen. The gunmen then opened fire on the victims, killing one, and critically injuring the other. The victims were father and son. One, or both, of the victims owned the store. The suspects were last seen at 12th and C Streets SE. They were driving a Pontiac Grand Prix with DC tags. MPD says they have some strong leads.

It's stories like these that make me seriously consider the death penalty.

Is the money taken by robbing a family store really worth killing one, potentially two innocent people?

They almost took out more people. I was walking back from the plumbing supply store yesterday when we saw these guys go tearing down 12th (at least I saw a silver car traveling at a high rate of speed while being pursued by two police cars. I was less than ten feet from the car (I was on the sidewalk), but it made us both think about the two kids killed several years back by another driver who had been running from the cops.

BTW, the friend I was walking swears the driver was laughing. I really only saw the car, not the driver, so I can't confirm that.

I am all for the death penalty! After years of living in this city, Ive come to see that most of the criminals on our streets have been in and out of jail multiple times. A primary problem as I see it is weak judges. We need stiffer penatlies for repeat offendors especially.

The way I see death sentence is from the point of view of the victim. Had the victim been given a chance to defend themselves what would they have done? Death penalty thus is a posthumous award by which the victim is able to defend themselves.

This is all really crazy. Too much, and ALL too close for comfort. We live on 10th and I and the shooting on Sunday, plus this, makes me want to STAY INSIDE! (Apparently there were also some gunshots fired at the corner of 10th and I on Monday night, but noone was shot.) This is all so not cool!

The death penalty will do no good. It all starts at home. If all of these uneducated, fatherless 14 year old girls keep having babies we will continue to see these things happen. The kids need role models, not mothers like this lady:

You can say it all starts at home, and thats true, but that does not obsolve the state from locking criminals up and keeping the streets safe. Justice should not be skewed because of ignorance. Likewise, these criminals should not be given free reign of our streets because they didnt have a proper upbringing.

seriously. it's lovely that DC wants to rehab its juvenile offenders, but how about keeping the rest of us safe in the meantime. even when mpd does their job, the city puts these kids back on the street. too bad the council is so damn soft on crime and the judges aren't much better.

The death penalty? I'd be happy if thugs got 10 or 20 real years behind bars. Instead they're all out it a few years committing more crimes. The last few high profile murderers in this city had at least a half dozen convictions.

the post updates that both the father and son died.

i don't want to hear any more of this boo-hooing about keeping the market intact. i mean, how many lives will it take before they raze that POS?

Poop- Okay, so let me understand your line of reasoning here. Criminals kill 2 innocent people at the Florida Market. The victims, whose livelihood presumably depended on the Florida Market, are now honored by having the whole place razed? I am not saying the Florida Market needs to stay by any means but I am not ready to say that you can use this example to further your argument. I wish you would target your angst towards the criminals in this circumstance rather than the innocent victims. Let me suggest that your angst would be more aptly placed in the sad fact that these people were not able to defend themselves in an instance where the government failed to do its most fundamental job.

Honestly, I feel like this could be very easily prevented by having at least a minor police presence in the area, and having store owners invest in some security cameras.

It's also a poorly guarded secret that independent wholesalers generally keep huge amounts of cash on hand to dodge taxes. (I used to work directly with several such businesses, although not in the DC area. We always got better prices and service if we paid cash, and the owners would usually keep several thousand dollars in the safe. It's a shady business practice, is enormously risky, and likely drew criminals to the Florida Market)
