NYT: Taylor Gourmet

IMG_5593

The New York Times recommends in a piece on K Street dining Taylor Gourmet (1116 H Street, the article mentions both locations). I'm glad they checked out Taylor, but one objection:

The writer mentions DC's "notorious inability to produce a decent Italian deli." Umm, different style than Taylor, but try Litteri's and Mangialardo and Sons.

Taylor's K St. location was on the front page of WashingtonPost.com yesterday as part of a story on the dining options on K St.

Rob,
I missed that one. Do you have a link?

Mangialardo and Sons is only open until 3pm Mon-Fri and has no weekend hours. In my book that degree of inaccessibility takes them out of the conversation for best italian deli. It's down to Litteri's and Taylor. I prefer Taylor.

I'm not saying either option is better than Taylor, just that we did indeed have decent Italian delis pre-Taylor.

Dear NYT,
Thank you for your amazement at our scrappy little city's progress. Your input is always welcome.

Sincerely,
D.C. Bumpkin

P.S. Calling something on at 5th & K part of the "K Street scene" is akin to calling some tiny theater on Broadway in the Bronx part of "Broadway."

I love Litteri. But from a New York perspective, the statement about lack of good Italian delis in DC is entirely true.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, and I DO like Taylor, but they get so much attention. They're good sandwiches, but they're just sandwiches, albeit some of the best in DC. But, the attention they get is kind of embarrassing for the same reason attention to any half decent pizza place is embarrassing--this isn't something to get crazy over unless there's a general lack of it.

Charles, from a NY perspective, we have a lack of pretty much anything, especially anything Italian.

Claudio, I had the same reaction.

I like taylors but the pork sandwiches at the new italian resturant at 2nd and F ST NE are even better. I think they might have better sandwiches!

I have to agree with charles and Christine. Taylor makes a decent sandwich. But places of equal or better quality are a dime a dozen in the New York/New Jersey/Philly area. A place like Taylor would probably do alright up there but certainly wouldn't be garnering the ink and attention it gets in DC. The bar is pretty low when it comes to food in DC, especially Italian food.

The even larger problem with the article is that none of the restaurants are located in the area commonly referred to as "K Street" which is further west. And only two of those establishments are actually on K Street.

This was one of the worst food based articles the Times has printed in recent memory as it had no news peg and any focus it attempted to have was contrived and misleading.

The NY Times article certainly beats the non article that we get from the Washington Post.

I'd say overall, DC's Italian food selection/quality is quite good.

DC's Italian-American food selection/quality, however, is pitiful.

Taylor's is very average people. The reason most rave about Taylor's is because there is almost no competion for them. Again, Taylor's is very average.

The reason I don't have a link is because I don't know the NYT from the WP...duh.

I happen to LOVE Taylor and totally understand the press coverage they get. Two guys buy a property on a run down street, quit their jobs, put out a good product and grow a business in the worst economic time we have ever seen. Not to mention they create very cool spaces. Makes sense to me

Competion...

A. Litteri, Inc.
Jetties
Potbelly Sandwich Works
Mangialardo and Sons
So's Your Mom
MGM Roast Beef
Vace Italian Delicatessen
Loeb's

I dont see any of their competion stepping anywhere close to their quality.

Tim C...well put! Folks, this is not NYC or Philly, it's D.C. Stop the negative jibber jabber and enjoy the progression in this town.

Tim C.,
you rock! I was objecting to the NYT crap. The Taylor guys totally a point that made it, even in a down turn. Props to them.
