Old Houses, and Weird Repair Jobs

It's been a million years since I posted here about a repair job in my house. I recently undertook a bathroom job that is big, but doable with help. I've got a friend acting as my general contractor, and I am working with him on most of the jobs. Recently we put up cement board, and I did the tile work. I had a plumber move the pipes behind said cement board. We installed the new shower and faucet. Today we took a trip to Home Depot (ride, and lifting assistance generously provided by a firefighter neighbor on her day off). Due to the bathroom leaks that we are now repairing we had to purchase greenboard for the kitchen ceiling that I was forced to remove. We ripped up two layers of vinyl tile from the bathroom floor and found...the original floor tile. Except that there is an odd 1940s era repair job with completely non-matching tile. Hmm. We spent quite a while (and there is much more to be done) removing glue from the old tiles. I also discovered that behind my white tiles walls is...more white tiles (and quite possibly the remains of Amelia Earhart). Sweet! Not that I plan on removing any more tiles than absolutely necessary.

It's kind of cool finding the original tiles (not in perfect shape, but savageable). They are the same white hex tiles that originally were in the house I grew up in (not a shocker since my house and that house were built four years apart). The work I'm doing now is dirty, and HARD work. I'm thankful to have a friend and neighbor(s) who are willing to help out. It's going to be a long haul (in a compressed time period), but I can already tell that it will be well worth it. I really hate vinyl tile anyway, but particularly the crap that was in my bathroom (the groutable thicker tiles aren't bad). Tomorrow we place the piping for the sink, and install a new vanity. I think we'll also have to move the light fixture (and replace it since it is missing some vital pieces) because it won't be centered, but that's a job for another time.

Just a reminder that you never know what you'll find behind that wall, or under that floor. After all, I found keys, money, and old silverware when I removed the old metal floor patches under my carpeting in 2003!

We bought a house two weeks ago and have been trying to find good contractors who will let us do some of the work to reduce costs. It has been a real struggle, and we hear completely different things from different individuals (eg, "We can match that floor no problem, we do it all the time!" vs. "Matching that floor would be impossible, anybody who tells you otherwise is lying.")

When we pulled up our kitchen floor we found a tiny little (about 3") bottle.

I found live .45 ammo in the ceiling tiles in my basement along with a budwiser can from the fifties

10:26,
I see your live ammo, and raise you one serrated knife found with the ammo.
