POP: Hearing About Violent Crime Keep You Away?

Prince of Petworth asks his readers if hearing/reading reports of violent crime leads them to avoid certain areas/neighborhoods in DC that they might otherwise visit. I thought this was timely because we've had a few stories recently about past events in Trinidad, and some have stated that they avoid the area due to perceptions that doesn't exactly reflect reality. How much do we unnecessarily avoid places because of distorted perceptions of crime? Conversely, how much do we ignore/downplay violent crime that occurs in our comfort zones?

I know I do unnecessary stuff because of my distorted perceptions all the time. I'm also attracted to violence because it puts me in my comfort zone.
