Sova on BBC America Tonight

You may recall that BBC America recently filmed classically trained indie performer Matthew Hemerlein doing his thing at SOVA. Well, now you can catch Hemerlein (including the SOVA footage) on BBC America. The show airs at 7pm tonight. The flyer from the performance appears below.

is that painting in the public domain?

No, but that's the flyer that was provided to me. I assume the painter knew about the flyer. These days nothing is in the public domain unless explicitly thrust there.

the painting is famous. and the artist is dead.

its a small thing i guess, but very unethical. it makes me dubious of their integrity.

Wow, you're judging their integrity? How lame.

Well, people shouldn't use stuff still under copyright (I don't know the copyright status of that painting) without permission, but I don't really know who put together the flyer. It might not have been the musical performer.

Either way, tune into BBC America...umm...right now.

the painting is by henri rousseau a french naive artist. it is titled sleeping gypsy. it was painted in 1897. i believe it is public domain since the copyright has expired.

and according to matthew's facebook page the bbc america interview will not be aired this evening.

Thanks Free to Choose,
The painting looked familiar, but I couldn't peg it down. It was indeed painted in 1897, and is thus in the public domain.

I thought the painting might be a redo of the original, which is why I said "no" when I should have said "I don't know." And then I later wasn't sure of the original date, so couldn't defend the flyer maker. Thanks for the education. Apparently we could all use it.

Let's hope Anon 5:59 & 6:10 (who knew the provenance of the painting, but never checked its copyright status) plans to attend. If you don't tell me the name of the artist, and there is an artist mentioned on the flyer, I will assume that that artist created the work on the flyer (even if it's a repot).
