What Do These Boxes Have in Common?

They, and four other callboxes in Trinidad, will soon be filled with art as part of Cultural Tourism DC's Art on Call program. Here's a quick sneak peak at a mock-up of the art. The callboxes themselves are painted black (despite the depiction below, the art will only be inside the box).

The artists are Anna Katerina Sagel, Felix Osuchukwu (3 pieces), Rosetta DeBernardinis, and Mikhail Hardy.

Apologies for the completely off-topic, but does anyone know what's up with the custard place next to Liberty Tree? I've been craving custard for days but am not motivated to drive to VA.

What were those boxes originally for, anyway?

Police and Fire phones. Pre-cell phone days, and back when cops walked the beat more.

also, back when the fire companies were private. and theres was competition amongst them.

sometimes you will see two call boxes of different design side by side.

7:49,
in DC you find two different designs. One was for police, the other for the fire dept.
