WP: Teaching Like it Matters

IMG_5862

Here's an opinion piece from the Washington Post. The writer, Michael Gerson, is discussing a recent visit to Wheatley Education Campus, in Trinidad. One caveat: I know I mentioned the 2008 shootings earlier today, but they occurred in 2008, not "recently" as this writer says. I'd chalk it up to poetic license, except that Gerson also says that the 13 year old boy (Alonzo Morgan of Atlanta) was hit by stray gun fire. Everything I've seen suggests that Alonzo's killers intended to shoot him.

Otherwise a decent column that looks briefly at some of the positive changes going on at Wheatley, and the importance of education reform in DC.

awesome article. i know it's an opinion piece by a conservative writer who's likely predisposed to be a big fan of teach for america, but i'm a crazy liberal guy who's a big fan of them as well.

i like to think that the people who care about this kind of stuff span all ideologies.

all that said, wheatley is an awesome building, with a great principal, and it's great to hear that the teachers care about the students and the program enough to keep them up at night as well.

we're lucky to have people who care in this neighborhood. don't forget that, trinidad.

I liked the article as well. I'm hoping that once we have the new community center open, and the community garden installed, that we can have more direct involvement between the school and neighbors.

I am very excited about the changes over at Wheatley. The kids love Principal Cartland, and he's got some great teachers backing him up. The kids also have some nice green space just behind the school, and they take full advantage of it. I've also often seen teachers out supervising students as they pick up trash. For years Wheatley was vacant due to slow renovations. Now, as a functioning school, it's a real asset to this part of Trinidad.
