CP: Capitol Hill Yes! Shops on H Street

The City Paper reports that the Yes! on Pennsylvania Ave is looking for a new location, and one of the places they're looking is H Street.

That's terrific! Hopefully it will be in the mid or east end of H.

West side is more fitting for a Yes!

Oh please, oh please come to H Street. West end or East end (preferably East end, but whatever).

In the interview, he says that the problem with their current location is size.

What available space on H is any larger? Is there anything?

Beyond H, there may be space in Hechinger Mall, I suppose.

According to the H Street Overlay, the western stretch of H St targets residential development which may be a more suitable location versus the bar/restaurant district to the east. The only multifamily building on the eastern stretch is Delta Towers.

Just saying.

Please!

Give Murray's the boot.

Hey neighbors any suggestions on how and what we can do as a community to have Yes Market come to our neighborhood.Perhaps a letter writing campaign of some sorts.Ideas wanted.

Is it too late for them to come to 3rd and H or are we stuck with LAME Giant?

Elise - FYI the past couple of times i've posted comments, the word verification was not showing a word, I have to skip it, get the error message saying to try again and then the second time, the word comes up.

There's about to be an overload of options for those on H St.

Giant at 3rd and H, Undisclosed at H Street Connection, Harris Teeter at NY Ave Metro, Murry's at 6th and H, and Aldi and Safeway at the Starburst.

WEST-SIDE!!!

this could be a potential great thing for h, but it blows royally for eastern market neighbors.

Funny how the development for the Hine School Property that came in second after being selected by the economic development DM, but overrided by Fenty, had a specific space set aside for Yes! to allow them to stay in the eastern market area.

Unfortunately, the cap hill mafia of Stanton Development had bought off the mayor then the Historic Board to support a monstrosity of a building that brought nothing new to the area, rather just have the shakespeare theatre a place to house interns.

So, while H might get Yes, Capitol Hill loses a specialty grocery store directly across the street from a metro.

Folks are talking about Yes! Market coming to H Street like it's a done deal.

Re-read the article.

"...about to be an overload of options..." That's hugely overstating it. I emailed Harris Teeter, and they aren't going to open until "late spring/early summer" 2011. The Aldi would be going into an existing space so could be built faster, but it's not confirmed that they will go in at Hechinger Mall. (I emailed Aldi and they said "We are looking at several sites in DC but nothing is officially confirmed yet.") The Giant would take at least a couple of years to build, and again, they haven't confirmed anything. As for H Street Connection, I'm not holding my breath. Even if it gets built, we have no idea of what kind of retail would go in there.

I do want to put in a plug for Murray's. Yes, it's heavy on the fatty meats and processed foods, and they still don't carry skim milk, but they do have a decent produce section (e.g., $3.99 watermelons all summer long) and plenty of reasonably priced basics (eggs, cheese, ice cream, turkey bacon, frozen vegetables, etc.) If you haven't been in there, do take a look. It will never be my primary grocery store, but it's nice to have in the neighborhood.

Yes! is soooo expensive... This neighborhood doesn't make a lot of sense for them.

I 2nd the plug for Murray's, it's not my primary grocery store either, but they have plenty of decent affordable produce. The storefront is uninviting, but the staff is friendly and helpful. I highly rec checking out what they have next time you're going to entertain-- frozen meatballs and wings = yay!
