I've got reports of an electrical fire last night at the AutoZone. Tony T. of the Pug first wrote in a little after 10:30pm to report a popped manhole cover and some fire related activity. Shortly after that I received this report from reader Jason Townsend:
It's happening now! Corner of 12 [and] H NE. So far, 9 fire engines at last count and they have cut power to several street lamps. Smoke is coming out of some of the manholes and they are inside AutoZone and on the rooftop...
A quick look at dcfireems on Twitter reveals that the fire was under control and Pepco on the scene shortly before midnight.
I'll update as I learn more.

UPDATE 3:54am
-------------------------
Likely related briefing from the Post says 1,600 homes in NE and SE lost power last night around 8pm and they were hoping to have it restored by 1am. Apparently they were working on an underground cable on Linden Place (just around the corner from the AutoZone, or "near the H Street District", as the Post puts it).
------------------------
UPDATE 9:02am
------------------------
I guess folks impacted by the outage I mentioned above just got there power on around 6am this morning, and others on the Hill don't have power. Let's hope they get it back soon. It's dangerous not to have AC in this heat.
--------------------------
UPDATE 1:54pm
--------------------------
Apparently some homes right around H Street and around the Hill are still without power. Pepco is shooting to have it up sometime around 4-4:30pm.

pat robertson?
I thought I saw some of the firemen last night working on their truck in the parking lot. I believe they were putting in a new starter.
Did the Autozone have them towed from the parking lot and ticketed?
Power was not completely restored this morning. Around Autozone, some folks still had no power, some had half power and some had full power. Very strange. Report from the workers on the job was that they thought everything would be up and running around 4:30 this afternoon.
I sincerely hope no one was hurt.
With that said, Karma indeed. That Autozone has the rudest, most unhelpful, and plain lazy staff imaginable. Hope they take their time rebuilding.
I live right at H Street and the partial power outages are still in full swing. We've been without air and most power for almost 24hrs now. The timing just sucks, as it was beyond hot today.
Hi,
I live near 13th and H, and I have been without partial power INCLUDING AC since 10:30 PM Last Night ....this is getting ridiculous and I could barely sleep last night and its sweltering now as we speak...I really can't afford to book a hotel, but I may have to so I don't suffer heat exhaustion!-the heat is just unbearable and all the items in my refrigerator has gone bad on top of that .....awesome
