I'm confused. Am I supposed to be able to taste the difference? Because I can't. The only real difference is the physical storefront.
I guess I'll continue going to Rita's since it's closer to my house, air-conditioned, cleaner, and employs friendlier staff.
I feel like PWIF has random hours. When are they open? Ice cream shops need to be open late if they want the neighborhood's support. I know I'm not the only person who lives in the area who works late. I don't get home from work until 7. By the time I want some ice creme, it's 9:30 or 10... if you close at 7, you're writing off a lot of folks in the neighborhood.
Are you guys really bitching about free delicious and a real kindness?
"real kindness"? Did you just arrive from Ohio or something? The "real kindness" has absolutely nothing to do with Rita's opening a block away. I like Philly ice and will still go there and all... but let's not be naïve about it.
Coming originally from Philly back at a time when Rita's was a small local chain, I'm quite partial to water ice. It's a natural part of summer.
I tried out PWI for the first time yesterday and was woefully let down. They didn't have the flavor I wanted. They gave me a cup that leaked all over me. And it didn't taste like strawberry-kiwi. It tasted like ascorbic acid-sugar. I really want to support them, as I love both Philadelphia and Water Ice, not to mention cheesesteaks and pretzels. But Rita's is usually clean, efficient, bright, and has sit-down space. They have posted hours and don't rely on one poor employee sitting in the back watching TV all day.
Here's to hoping that we can have multiple water ice options on H Street and that Rita's healthy competition will spur useful improvements at PWI.
Also, Rita's has gelatis, which sound nasty at first but are a revelation to eat.

Ritas also has great staff! The management as well as the kids working provide outstanding customer service. They always offer samples, while still keeping the lines moving. As soon as you walk in the door, they greet you with a "Welcome to Ritas!"Great job, and welcome to the neighborhood!
