Arboretum Place to Break Ground Next Week

They are still putting together the facts sheet, but the project, which has been in the pipeline a LONG time is ready to go. You can pull up old posts on the development here or on DCmud, but I'm not sure how much has changed since I last saw the plans. This is a large scale apartment development on the old Sears site (behind Hechinger Mall).

Here's a description of the project from November 2008:

I'll be impressed and surprised if this goes forward now - right in the teeth of an economic downturn. Although I suppose that if it takes 2-3 years to complete, it might come on line at the right time to take advantage of the recovery. It would be very nice to get some more residential density around H street, which would support the growing revival of business on H.

Inked,

Where did you see that they are going to break ground next week? I just looked at Clark's website regarding this development and I dont see anything indicating the ground breaking. I too would be surprised if this will be the first large scale development to break ground. I would have imagined Steuart's development at H and 3rd NE would be the first to go. Thanks in advance for any background info you can provide.

This is good news for the diner, and the rest of us.
There is a huge demand for housing in DC. 7,000 people a day are moving to the DC area. That location will be terrific, only blocks away from not only the street car, CVS and Safeway on a renovated street, but the Arboretum. What's not to love there???

Yeah, anon5:10pm you might want to think again. DC population grew by around 9,600 in 2009.

anon said 7000 are moving to the DC "area". I would take that to mean the whole DMV

There is already some residential density in this area with the Pentacle apartments and Delta towers, although perhaps not of the demographic this will cater to.

This is such great news! I was trying not to get my hopes up since I am still fairly skeptical its actually going to happen, but this development will be so great for Rosedale/Trinidad and the eastern H Street area. Way to go Clark!!! We support this development and welcome to the neighborhood!!!

Any ideas if this is going to be apartments or condos????

Jordan,
it'll be luxury apartments (some of which will qualify as affordable housing). I would say the controversial aspect is that they got a 20 year tax abatement.
