The Post reports that with 2010 60% over we have a total of 69 homicides so far versus 84 last year. If the trend continues we will not only come in under 2009's total, which was itself the lowest number in years, but will actually have the lowest homicide rate the District has seen since 1966. MPD points to a homicide closure rate of 82.6%.

Eh, there was a 13% downturn in 2006 followed by a 7% upturn in 2007. Moreover any realistic analysis of violent crime against persons needs to include aggravated assaults, which numbered 3000+ last year. Progress is being made, but I wouldn't call it monumental.
