Ah, the online review. To respond or not respond, that is the question. Clearly, i love to see myself in print, that's why i always hijack frozen tropics with info onthe stick ball league. Any press is good press, but i will point out that at the pug, the pbr is in bottles (which are going to be a scant $2 each for the fest de h). Also, as a minor point, their's a difference between a shot and a shooter, snd i'm hoping that one who reviews bars would know the difference. See you saturday for shots, cheap beers, and undergound food from upstairs.

Thank you, Tony. Generally, things are pretty hazy when I pay my tab at the Pug, but I knew there was NO WAY a pbr could be $4. I've definitely bought a round of beers and a whiskey once, paid with my "yuppie food stamp" (WTF?) and got change back.

True, there is a fine line between a "shot" and a "shooter"...but as a general rule both shooters and shots are served in shot glasses and consumed with one tip of the glass. We may be splitting a pretty fine hair on this one.

And yes...one round (there were three of us) cost me $12. The next round we switched to Natty Boh that seemed to be a dollar cheaper.

Never heard the term yuppie food stamp??

no shooters is the best motto a bar can adopt!

oh how cute, this guy from Omaha thinks 6 packs of PBR cost $4.

HitThatDive said...

From Omaha? Not quite. IN Omaha by way of Pittsburgh and NOVA...yes. And, when on sale at my local grocery store, a sixer of PBR "tall boys" is $4.89 (plus tax).

It's Friday, enough bickering. Shooters for everyone!!

I would consider the Pug more of a neighborhood bar and less of a dive. And it's the type of place that gets better the more times you go.

Star and Shamrock is not even close to a dive, it's still all bright and shiny new.

I like the concept of the blog but found the content weak.

HitThatDive said...

Think about HitThatDive much like you do about The Pug...it gets better the more times you go.

Cool- if you keep reviewing DC places I'll keep reading. And here's a good list to work with

I like how he mentioned cops drinking while watching the game. I <3 DC.

AWard...thanks for the list! I'm always looking for contributions for the site. If you ever want to write a review, send in a picture, or give me a shout if you find a new dive...please do!

Clearly senor gates, you fail to realize that all i do with my time is wait to post on frozen tropics. I'm jealous of the site, i'ld love to review bars aroind the country but it's those damn kids that keep me chained up. Keep reviewing. As a dc/pg county guy, i think you know that i don't see much difference between omaha, northern va, or pittsburgh. As to the shot/shooter debate, i would go with a shooter being a mix of ingredients often with a clever name. Since i'm a crap bartender, i prefer the one bottle no chilled shot. Keep drinking keep reviewing, hope to see you sat for a "drink" of whiskey.

tonyt...I'm a crap bar drinker a shot of Crown and any cheap beer there is works for me!

I agree with Tony's definition. A kamikaze, or sex on the beach might be a shooter, while one drinks a shot of vodka, or a shot of whiskey. I've had shots at the Pug, but never shooters.

Didn't the Pug used to have a list of drinks available so you could see what was cheap. Natty Boh or Shaefer is the way to drink there.

As luck would have it, looks like I'll be in DC Tuesday night. Small amounts of whiskey in short glasses on me!

Meh. Shot vs shooter.

It's not a real party until one bar patron leans his head upside down over the bar, gets liquor drizzled into his nostrils, and another lucky patron sucks it out.

I didn't think it was possible until I saw it done (up until then I'd never even thought about such a thing but when it was brought up I assumed the liquor in the nostril would cause you to sneeze it out or something maybe worse).

Of course, the nostril-guy was a total lush (and I mean that in a nonjudgemental way), so he may have had special skills.

I spend my free time with a really classy crowd.

I read this thing a couple hours ago and am not going back to reread it. There was mention of hipsters and yuppies and people who all dress the same or something like that. That seems like a pretty diverse group. If that is all dressing the same, how are we supposed to dress differently. There are only so many ways to combine tees, polos, shorts, jeans, sandals, sneakers, whatever, and I think hipsters have found them all. Are we suppposed to make our own clothes out of tinfoil and other household goods?

And what cabbie hasnt driven to H St before? More eveidence that I could be the top earning cabbie in DC.

SGatees I'm curious as to what other parts of town you frequent and where you got in that cab. Just trying to figure out the baseline the Pug and S&S are being held to.

And why is a $20 bill a yuppie food stamp? Its called money. Its not like it is even a large bill. Who even says yuppie anymore? That is from the 80's and 90's. Clearly you spent time in Pittsburgh (trapped in 1992). Do you have an IROC and a mullet? This time traveling you seem to have done would also explain why the $20 denomination is something only high fallutin yuppies use (because you are used to the 80's and 90's consumer price index).

Who are these other people who are familiar with this term? I'm sorry I can't let this go.

Did anybody see The League last night where Andre wants to create a catch phrase? I'm thinking we have a similar sitch here

Shooter McGavin (Dave B) said...

I suggest you drop the yuppie foodstamp phrase? I know you spent some time in Pittsburgh which hasnt progressed past 1992, but $20 really isnt that much money anymore. I also dont think people have used the word yuppie since 1992 either

Shooter McGavin (Dave B) said...

woops. i got an error after my second post and didnt think it went through. disregard the 3rd one (or the 2nd, whichever you prefer). time to pop my collar, tie a sweater around my neck, and play some squash before acapella practice

Oh yeah. and feather my hair

"Clearly you spent time in Pittsburgh (trapped in 1992). Do you have an IROC and a mullet?"

Pittsburgh is a pretty darn nice town. Has really redeveloped very nicely. Has some excellent bars, and a thriving gay scene which I'd say is by and large more fun and certainly more diverse than the gayborhood scene in DC.

And you can actually walk the streets of large sections of that town without fear of getting whacked in the head, which is more than I can say for a lot of DC.

And you can live like a king for 1/4 the price of living in DC.

And as far as I know none of their cops have killed any dogs lately.

HitThatDive said...

"Shooter! Great to hear from you! You wanna go to the Sizzler and get some grub?"

I picked up the cab from the W, not sure why that matters...but you asked.

Where do I go when In town? Hmmmmm...well clearly H Street. Pennsylvania Ave. SE is a regular hang out for me. A list of the places I stop can be found here! www.hitthatdive.com. You can always follow me on Twitter or like HitThatDive on Facebook to keep up with my travels.

I'll be in town Tuesday...let's do lunch (or is that too 90's of a phrase these days?)
