Where Can I?

I'm toying with the idea of a recurring feature on where on, or near, H Street you can find a certain good or service. For instance:

Where can I find the New York Times on H Street? Until very recently the answer used to be you can't. But now you can purchase it (and the Wall Street Journal) at the newly opened 7/11. Which looks great by the way, except that someone smashed one of the windows. The new 7/11 is located in the H Street Connection (800/900 block of H Street).

Love the 7-11 and they have a great staff. Very clean and bright. Great selection as always for a 7-11.

I find it regrettable that the ANC is assaulting 7-11 because they want to sell chicken wings. I don't know much about this at all but from I do know it appears the ANC is trying to drive away decent business, places you can actually get a New York Times.

Let's work on things that actually matter and not waste time with this ridiculous stuff. I don't like the bones on the ground but that is not a problem with 7-11, it is the people that litter.

Agree with Russ... I've been to the new 7-Eleven a few times now, and it really is a nice addition to the neighborhood. No, it's not "trendy" like most of H Street, but it's a clean, bright store with a very friendly staff where you can go to pick up your everyday items. (Bonus: I no longer have to go to the one on Maryland & 8th!)

I actually spoke with the owner of the store a few days after it opened--he's a very friendly and personable guy, BTW--and he said he's very much aware of the reservations people had about the store, and is going to strive to make sure the store is just as good to the neighborhood as he hopes the neighborhood will be to the store.

As far as the broken door, I hadn't seen that yet, but what on Earth is wrong with people?! Some people just have to ruin it for everyone else. I really hope they catch the person who did it.

Think of the broken door as a christening of sorts. Welcome to H St! Hopefully you dont need to be rechristened at any point

Anyone know their hours? I have to get used to it being there.

I don't understand the ANC 6A opposition to chicken wings. The next version of ANC 6A is going to be even more into our drawers about things. A certain "historic" clique is already rejoicing the absence of Robinson, Beatty and Raphael on the commission. At least two of newby's are hand picked clones.

I think someone broke the window with a chicken bone.

Their hours are 24/7. Just talked to the owner today, well everyday I have gone he has been there. He said the window was broken at 4pm, yes PM by someone that was inside the store and went a bit nuts. They think it was possibly a mentally ill person that probably was on PCP or something. Bad it was broken, good that it was not what we all suspected it was.

TonyT, were you practicing stickball in the 7-11 parking lot again....?

Only on H Street would someone smash the window of a brand new 7-11! So LAME! Sick of this crap.

sadly, not just on h. it's weird that you would think that. is your perception that h street is the worst area of the city? it's not.

can any tell me the 411 on the proposed bar at 6th and H St?

OK. I give up. On what block is the new 7-11?

The new feature is a good idea.

I like those H Street ads in the Hill Rag that have all the businesses listed by block. Something like that online would be nice.

Or, like at the Mall, a directory by category -- restaurants, toys, clothing, etc.

Remember quite a few of us do not know where these businesses are that you mention. Please give addresses, or at least a block.

7:59,
it's in the H Street Connection (800 block of H Street). I mentioned that last week when I announced the grand opening. It replaces a dollar store in the same location.

Actually it's in the 900 block, near 10th St.

Hey, Russ, you clearly don't know what you are talking about, as you acknowlege, so maybe you shouldn't mouth off here. The 7-Eleven promised the community they would put in a phone line for MPD, but failed to do so. They are not good neighbors and not following the rules or zoning regs.

Anonymous said...

The MPD provides cell phones and radios for each officer, and the cars have laptops, how can anyone really justify demanding that 7-11 provide a landline? Does each bar provide a landline?

Anonymous said...

How can anyone justify a landline? How can you not?
Do you remember 9/11 when the cellphone circuits overloaded and everyone lost communication? Last year, there was a failure of the MPD radio system. They were inexplicably down for hours.
During the 2009 Inauguration, cellphone communication was interrupted when the circuits exceeded capacity. Frequently happens in emergency situations.

Beyond that, 7-11 made an agreement. They failed to comply. Does not bode well.

Has anyone asked the folks at 7-11 if they still intend to put in a landline for MPD? It's just as likely they have been a little busy opening a new business and some things slipped between the cracks. How about the first person to get a coffee or other beverage this morning just ask? I would have but already got my coffee this morning. In the meantime, congrats and thanks to the H Street 7-11 on starting a new business in the area.

I doubt if a 7-11 has to make an agreement with anyone except a landlord, and city licensing agency to open a store.

Thanks for the address. I missed the earlier post.

Idea for a "where can I" post:

"Where can I obtain replacement Harry Thomas and Kwame Brown campaign signs?"

Matt -- hahahaha!!!!

But in all seriousness - be careful, she is a crazy person.

Hmmm. Picking up a hard-copy of the New York Times is ur-Gentrifier behavior, yet 7-11 is often a hot ghetto mess.

Can't...decide...whether new 7-11 is "oldtimer" or "newcomer"...

Brain...hurts...

oboe,

slang news alert: using the phrase "hot ghetto mess" is limited exclusively to people who grew up in a ghetto as a child. sorry, adulthood experiences in impoverished neighborhoods don't count. it's like a consolation prize for being exposed to childhood trauma. please respect the contest rules.

on a completely serious (versus half serious) note, the 'where can i?" idea is great, inked.

maybe the next one can be "where can i get a haircut" so some of our new neighbors won't trek to suburban malls to get overcharged for a hatchet job when there are some folks handy with a pair of scissors and clippers right here in the hood.
