Apparently we had a double shooting (one fatality) last night. A male shot two teens in the 1300 block of Holbrook Street. The kid that died was between 16 and 18. The survivor is 17. The shooter is still at large. Sorry to be short on details, but MPD somehow didn't send an alert out for this one, and Fox news is reporting that it is going to occur tonight. TBD reports that the call came in a 8:47pm. This is in Trinidad.

The number of crimes has significantly increased over the past couple months.
I thought activity drops with respect to outdoor temperature??
In the last month, in my neighborhood near NY Ave Metro, a hand full of homes and a dozen cars have been burglarized, including my own car. What gives?
It's petty crimes that lead up to murders. Catch criminals (juveniles) before they can commit harsher crimes.
I hope Vincent Gray is listening to the police blotter as closely as I am.
Mendelson's catch and release mentality with Juvi's only feeds the culture of "nothing will happen to me." It starts with the law, and then with their only safety until the final ramification is death. It's sad, really and I think the blood of everyone of these kids dying lays on the hands of a neutered council that refuses to create a legal system with ramifications. There... I said it.
11:14 -
I've got news for you - even if the law was more strict, these little turds would still be running around shooting up places.
It really irks me when I see people putting the blame on other people which you are doing right now. It's inexcusable and does nothing to solve the problem.
The problem actually lays on the hands of the parents. How can you raise a kid when you have a crack head daddy MIA and a mother who couldn't give two farts about you? Meanwhile the only role model you have are the gang bangers running around in the streets. Do you really think these people give a shit what the law says?
The short term fix is to add more police presence. The long term fix is to fix their problems at home.
I agree. Unless you get to the root of the problem, no law in the world will stop this nonsense.
Nonsense. If you keep putting criminals back on the streets, they will keep committing crimes. If you lock them up, they wont be on the streets to commit additional crimes. Obviously, DC needs to do more than lock up a bunch of kids, but the juvenile offenders around here are not scared of getting locked up because they know they'll be back on the street the next day. You don't fix that just by improving social services. Even is a better law doesn't provide great general deterrence, it can keep some of these offenders from being able to commit further crimes. All the police officers I know say they know who the criminals are, they just can't keep them off the streets. Council needs to fix that.
Vincent Gray, here's your chance to make a significant impact on your beloved Wards 7 and 8.
Yeah - lets lock up all those little punks on the corner who sell dime sacks of weed for 20 years because clearly once you've committed a crime you're going to turn into a violent offender who will kill babies and rape grandmothers. In fact, if we just locked everyone up for life we would drastically reduce the amount of crime on the streets!
Even with the highest incarceration rate of any first world country we still have incredibly high crime rates. Clearly incarceration is the answer.
Fed: The shooting took place in Ward.
Im not sure if we can get to the root. You can't make people parent better. Even kids from good homes can go bad. I think the ultimate solution is police presence, pricing out the lower income people, expland the role and budget of CFSA to intervene eariler. In the end some people think its okay to shoot people. No matter their age, they should be punished when caught.
A good start would be to screen out deadbeat welfare recepients. With the money saved we could provide some useful training/education to the poorer people of DC so they can get jobs that will keep them off welfare and out of trouble.
Also, an overhaul of the welfare system wouldn't be such a bad idea too. The system needs to be changed so that they do not reward you with more money when you sh*t out more kids. I'm not sure if it is still done this way but back when I was in college in the 90's that's how it was. It makes no sense to me.
I don't know why this isn't talked about enough but I seriously think that this plays a major role in the problems we're seeing in the poorer neighborhoods of DC. How do you get unfit mothers to stop having kids they cannot care for? Cut off the money source. A lot of these people are having kids just for the sake of getting a bigger welfare check in the mail.
mo, When you cut off a stable monthly income, albeit it being from welfare programs, be prepared for those affected to resort to alternative means to earn an income. Please expect to have your car window broken for that spare change.
Mo - how about before speculating about how welfare might actually work these days you do some research? "I'm not sure if it is still done this way but back when I was in college in the 90's that's how it was." News flash - it's at least 10 years past "the 90's." Not only have many policies gone through significant change in the last 10 years, the thought that welfare mothers get a larger benefit than non-welfare mothers for having an additional child has consistently shown to be false. Welfare has no impact on birth rate. Sorry, try again.
Allow me to carry my gun outside my house and when I see someone out shooting people I can shoot them with a LEGAL weapon. Don't get my wrong, I am happy I can finally have a gun in my house legally, but if good citizens were able to carry we could effect crime. This city has more military and off duty officers than any city in the world but we are neutered by the left wing gun hatters.
Fed up-
That's fine, I don't mind having my windows smashed in every now and then in exchange for putting a stop to having another generation of bad kids shooting up the streets
I'm not saying completely remove welfare but perhaps revise the system a little so they suspend or reduce the amount if your kids get into trouble or get bad grades. Maybe that would get the parents to take a more active interest in what their kids are up to every day.
And yes, it is confirmed the more kids u have the bigger the welfare check u get
what the hell are you people talking about
Personally, I am proud of this thread. Used to be it would take at least 40 comments before the thread devolved into nonsense. This one did it in the early teens!
We're trying to get to the root of the problem and maybe find ways to reduce crime. Feel free to chime in..no need to diss other people's input as nonsense
Not for nothin' but if some of you folks have it all figured out, run for office. Airing your grievances on a neighborhood blog isn't doing anything to shake up the status quo.
Where's the outrage I saw frim community members the last time that guy got gunned down by the special police last year?
inked,
could you disable comments for all crime-related stories? i have never seen anything useful come out of comments in relation to a crime story on FT
Then don't read the comments. I'm seeing some pretty good points made here.
Since MO is clearly not MO'tivated to do a little research, I figured that I would help...
On August 22, 1996, President Clinton signed into law the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, Public Law 104-193, better known as the Welfare Reform Bill. This law changes how governmental financial assistance is administered including: changing federal funding to states from an open-ended entitlement to a series of capped block grant allocations; sets time limits on entitlements and cash assistance to welfare recipients; requires most welfare recipients to engage in job activities (this includes work experience, community service, job training, vocational education); changes the disability definitions for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for children who apply; mandates states to establish methods to enforce collection of unpaid parental child support; denies many legal immigrants from collecting SSI and food stamps; consolidates all child care programs into the Child Care and Development Block Grant, and changes foodstamp recertification requirements.
Am I missing something? I don't see anything in the article that says you don't receive additional money if you have more children.
Ok Mo...I was joking about your lack of motivation but you clearly will not let "facts and/or reason" get in the way of your argument. The Reform act which is nearly 15 years old at this point sets a cap and time limits
(60 months) on benefits. The only increase in benefits that a family would receive for having an additional child would be in Food Stamps which was originally an entitlement program for the farm industry. The Act also stipulates that the recipient must work a minimum of 20 hours per week, attend school or participate in volunteer activities. If you want any more information...I suggest you GOOGLE it.
I have to agree with the anon about carrying weapons for self defense. It wouldn't have made a difference in this case as the victim was a kid but I would certainly feel a lot safer if I could carry.
