Thanks for posting! As a burlesque dancer and a new resident of DC (and a resident of and totally in love w/ this neighborhood) I feel fortunate to have a venue like the Palace to perform in and watch shows. I hope the Palace continues to be a unique venue featuring burlesque and sideshow, so I'm trying to show my support by attending shows and giving the best performances that I can.

I just discovered your blog and I'm loving the insight into my new neighborhood. Thank you!`

Some Giant news today...

I would like to kick off the inevitable discussion of how I would've preferred a Whole Foods or Wegmans instead of Giant.

Aside from that, I hope that we've garnered enough respect in the H Street area so that we dont have a repeat of the horrible service and products that we currently have at the Brentwood Giant and Safeway at Maryland and Benning Rd. Furthermore, I hope that this Giant runs both the Safeway and the old Brentwood Giant out of business.

I second that anon.
I can't speak for the Giant over at Brentwood but the Safeway at Md and Benning is horrible. Long lines with only a few registers open and a lack of quality fruits and veggies are the biggest issues I have with them. I don't care which grocery opens at 3rd and H, just keep the lines short and have decent fruits and veggies please

It's not that the Giant Food management doesn't care about its customers--it's that the management doesn't give a fuck explicitly about it's lower middle-class and poor customers. They figure they're a captive market.

Why do you think the NE Safeways and Giants have all received comprehensive facelifts over the last 5 years or so? This Giant will probably be really, really nice, and all the rotten meat and moldy vegetables will go to some Giant in PG county from now on.

(No I'm not a fan; could you guess?)

Again, I guess I am the only person on this blog that appreciates the Safeway at Hechinger Mall. No, it's not perfect, but having lived in Columbia Heights previously I can tell you the Giant on Park road is not picnic either, and I enjoy going to the Safeway on Benning MUCH more.

I would like them to improve; I certainly don't want them to shut down and have to frigging 3rd street to get my groceries.

Our family tried out PeaPod grocery delivery (run by Giant in our area) and love it. They recently stopped charging the delivery fee ($5) and we schedule delivery when we want it. We cut our grocery bill by using the service, my wife and I figure it's due to zero impulse buying. We have never had an issue with the meats and fruit -- all fresh.

Love the fact that Giant is coming.

Next on the list, a gym.
