Elise, do you have any info on places' schedules over the holidays? Not NYE specifically, but whether places are open/closed on Christmas day/night, New Years Day/night, etc.?
Sorry for the thread-jack, but does anyone know the details of why Garrick and Erin are no longer associated with Toyland? Something about shady deals with the third partner?
I have a feeling it will get it's own post, but my understanding is the landlord wanted extra money on top of the rent. Of course could be wrong.
Was in last night hoping to get dinner and watch the Caps game but no dice. No TV, the people behind the bar had no idea what they were doing and service was terrible.
FakeToyland stinks and it's a shame those of us living on the western end of H street lost a great neighborhood place.
Of course the worst is the great staff behind the bar and in the kitchen that find themselves without jobs a few days before Christmas.
@RPW- Yeah, I figured Elise would probably cover it, but thought maybe someone had further details than what's been posted on FB. I'm so bummed- as a fellow west-end-H-St dweller, this is a big loss to our neighborhood. I really enjoyed getting to know Garrick and Erin and seeing how their dream became a reality. They were a fantastic addition to the neighborhood. Not to mention they poured some great cocktails.
re: the staff- there's already some talk of putting together some sort of benefit for them.
To be sure, Garrick and Erin will land on their feet- they had a great thing going. I hope that they'll try again (on H St, too).
There was a major management/owner/contract dispute at Toyland. It is still unresolved. I think the situation and timing is awful for all involved. I consider a central purpose of Frozen Tropics to generally promote businesses along the H Street Corridor. As such, I try to stay out of management disputes to the extent possible. I'm pretty sure that even if Erin and Garrick do not continue on with Toyland (unfortunately it appears to me that the relationship has been damaged beyond repair) they will be involved with a business on H Street. I too am saddened by what has happened, but I do hope that Toyland will continue to succeed (it's still an all local team running the place), just as I wish Erin and Garrick the absolute best with any venture they may wish to pursue in the future. Hopefully they will stay on H Street, as I think they did a great job with Toyland, and I think they are both very nice people, terrific bartenders, and great managers.
Yo, inked, if u r really all about promoting business on H, u might as well get paid for it. It's in everyone's interest. You might even make enough money to never, ever practice law!
Part of a house in the District's H street NE corridor collapsed last night as firefighters battled a spectacular fire, authorities reported.
No injuries were reported in the blaze, which broke out about 9:30 p.m. in the 800 block of 10th Street NE, said D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer.
He said that as firefighters were trying to quell a blaze in one house on the block, the front wall and porch of an adjacent house fell in.
Both houses appeared to be unoccupied, he said. However, he said, a family of two adults and two children were displaced from a house on the other side of the one that caught fire.
Witnesses saw flames shooting through the roof of the burning house, as firefighters worked on a street that soon became slick with ice in the night's wind and freezing temperatures.
H Street NE, a major city artery just south of the block where the fire broke out, was shut down for a time.
On a non-related topic; The DOES has begun their relocation to their new facility on Minnesota Ave. So, for those who live around the 600 block of H Street and have been complaining about parking, we now will have more spaces during the day. Also, the future of the building is undecided.
Just got word that 1244 H St collapsed. Listening via scanner now, but sounds like specops, hazmat, etc are being called out. Not sure if it is a false call or not. If'n I were home, i'd look outside and see whats up.
Yeah - from the description (3 story, cinder block construction) i'm guessing it is that new one being build to 1244's immediate left - between it and G. Moores.
Now it sounds like some of 1242 did actually come down - DCRA is on scene to investigate. DCFD requesting that 1200 block of H stays closed at this time.
I like the new dudes behind the bar at Toyland. Very friendly and make a good drink. Toyland is a great bar and I hope it will overcome all this negativity.
With this being said,Are they closed for bussines ? I thought this was a cool spot and a welome addition to the neighborhood. I hope that Toyland can work it out.
I'm assuming that the DOES building is the newish brick one? Not the worst building I've ever seen but always thought it would be not the best use of a space on H St. It'll be interesting to see what happens to it. Does the district own it? can they sell it?
@Dave B A few years ago a developer (from Florida I think) bought the building with intentions to develop the whole block. Us neighbors had a huge discussion and agreement signed with them. I was told that the District leased the building as a temporary location for DOES until a facility can be settled for a permanent location. I also heard that the property is on the market. The economy simply interrupted development. Same with other locations too I guess.
I see Toyland will survive. As long as people still go and make it a place they want to go to.
Is there any pictures of the fire and damage at the 1200 block of H St.?
@nikkiooooo -- you are definitely a troll, that slumlord Dave or his loser scab employees. No one could like those people, or the place they operate. Fake Toyland will soon be another vacant building on H.
NYE at HSCC was fun! With the exception of the adult pinatas. What was with the "adult" stuff inside of it? Panty liners, vagisil and midol were part of the "treats". Kind of insulting.

Sounds like it was just some scaffolding or something.
DC Fire EMS twitter first said it was 1244 H, but then "corrected" it to say simply "1200 blk"

Not sure what the details are leading to the partnership dissolution but Toyland is a great addition to our neighborhood. It has my continued support.
