District Curmudgeon: A Killer on the Block

The District Curmudgeon writes about receiving a stamped letter (with no return address) stating that Kwan Kearney, who stands accused of shooting two teens in Trinidad (one fatally), and murdering another man, lived on the Curmudgeon's block. The letter is accurate, and it's another sad reminder that as great as most of your neighbors might be, there's sometimes a troublesome element lurking about.

The City Paper picked up the story.

I have walked by that house (1212 Oates St NE) numerous times this summer and noticed multiple teenagers (male and female) smoking marijuana in the middle of the day. On some, not all, occasions they even had a baby with them on the porch while they were doing drugs. It is clearly a place you can either buy drugs or inquire where you can get them.

In the years i have lived in Trinidad I have met some great people. I have also learned to stay clear of others. Another great example of terrible parenting and a youth population that does not care if they kill their neighbors. Classy family indeed!!!

This story is tragic and unfortunate for so many reasons. Firstly, once again, two young people have lost their lives to a couple of insecure, lowlifes, who obviously were raised in an environment where the values and appreciation of love and life were not present. From what I've read about Joseph Sharps, he was a young man with promising potential. I feel for parents who do all the right things for their children (especially their black boys) in neighborhoods that have traditionally challenged their efforts with obstacles and uphill battles, only to have their child murdered by someone who didn't put the same effort and care into their own child. Until some of these parents and grandparents realize that enabling their child or grandchild to be irresponsible, law breakers, and overall non-productive delinquents, is just not being a good caregiver or guardian. All they are doing is laying the foundation for a multi-generational vicious cycle. You are not a good homeowner and/or parent if you have multiple adults living in your house (including your adult children) who sit around and do nothing all day (which seems like what's going on at 1212 Oates). I'm glad that the neighborhood vigilante sent the anonymous letters alerting the people of Trinidad about Kearney and where he lays his head when he's not in police custody for being a useless member of society. How can we be safe and work on helping Trinidad thrive when we have homeowners feeding and putting a roof over the head of career criminals? How will our property values ever go up with these kind of neighbors in our midst? I hope the Kearney family's new year's resolution for 2011 is to get it together and break the vicious cycle that will inevitably be inherited by the babies in that house.

We'll its sad all around, but the crime is more about the criminal than the neighborhood. Terrible people live all over. There's a family in mourning, the holidays are here, and they have one less family member to share them with.

I hope justice is served.
