For a while this neighborhood was moving in the right direction. The atlas flats across the street, starburst intersection, trolly line, new landscaping and sidewalks along benning and h, etc. This proposal is a slap in the face. It's a big F you to the surrounding community.

Since when are affordable groceries a big FU to the community?

I'd like to see the store front to the street and parking pushed to the side and rear. But the notion that any project that doesn't aim to be for hi-rise residential with retail and underground parking is an FU is ridiculous.

Aldi has been the same design and consumed by the same demographic market for years. It is below no brand. Thats why a can of corn costs 20 cents. for those who are now objecting to them, you should have done your homework earlier. If your expecting a Harris Teeter with No Brand Pricing its not happening.

This has nothing to do with the brand, it's about architecture and layout of the property. Why can't they make the main vestibule flush to the sidewalk on I St? or even better, flush to corner with 17th? This is just hostile to pedestrians. There really is no reason why an inner city business should force their pedestrian customers to walk across a parking lot to reach the entrance. Hechinger Mall is already one big wasted storefront opportunity. Why repeat the same mistake.

They should be required to build underground parking to make an option on the air rights for future mixed use a viable option.

I was referring to the design of the Aldi. I'm not a fan of Aldi and will not shop there but I welcome it to the neighborhood anyway. However, this design is a slap in the face.

Who said anything about wanting a HT?

"Aldi has been the same design and consumed by the same demographic market for years"

This statement is absolutely false. Aldi offers plenty of other designs. They are also not only consumed by the same demographic. Where did you get this information from?

can someone explain why it's not going into the site of the former NWL?

I thought that was the plan- to use existing space in the plaza?! There will be a street car stop less than 100 feet from the front door, and there is a busy X2 bus stop there already.

@tom

Aldi is about 1/4 the size of the NWL space.

I know the existing space at Heckinger is larger than needed, but it would make more sense to use PART of the existing store, no? It's not like the the interior of an Aldi's is anything more than a shell with shelves in the middle and coolers on the sides.

"Since when are affordable groceries a big FU to the community?"

It's a big "fuck you" when we're working on displacing the community that needs affordable groceries!

tom: it's been my understanding that the leasing agent is unwilling to subdivide the space. kind of ridiculous, as no one else appears to want to rent there.

honestly, if we were going to put a walmart in ward 5, it would make more sense here than up at ny ave and bladensburg. but everyone wants a nice new building, not to reuse empty space.
