Can anybody provide some new info on this place?

Is it any better?
Is it still a ripoff?

Haven't been there since a Sunday in October when I had an average $10 pint (pretty sure that was the cheapest or close to it). After being sat outside, I couldnt just leave when I saw the beer prices.

I accept their role as an expensive destination spot for people who don't know any better. Was just wondering if that gimmick was still working for them and if I could start going there now.

I really enjoy hanging out there. It is pricey but not that much more than any other place on H. I like German beer and have found it a great place to get my fix. It's also a fun place to watch a game. I've had the occasional bad dining experiences at nearly every restaurant in our neighborhood but have accepted the fact that each place has the potential to pull a mulligan. I don't take it personally.

I don't disagree that its expensive, especially their food for what it is, but a lot of their beers go for around $12-13 a liter. That's actually a pretty good deal for 34oz of quality beer.

It caters to the bridge and tunnel crowd. Which in my opinion is okay. That pretzel costs like 42 bucks.

I've had great food and beer there, in a fun atmosphere. I don't think it's more expensive that elsewhere on H, and certainly I've had poor service on occasion at all of the new (and old) places on the street (except for Liberty Tree and New Citi - I've never had any issues at either of those).

It's not a place just for "people who don't know any better" or the "bridge and tunnel crowd." I always see neighbors there... at least those neighbors who appreciate good beer and a fun place to drink it.

I'm with Campy. The most *expensive* beer they have is 10.90 for a "true" pint (500ml). You can get a liter of beer for $11/$12. That's $5 or $6 for a 16oz beer. Almost any bar in town will charge you $5 for a 12oz beer.

Beer, fries and a pretzel ... death by carbohydrates.

That is not the Octoberfest menu that I saw most recently. Back in the early days I remember 7 dollar pints. They got full of themselves (or sought to capitalize) during Octoberfest, when theh cheapest pints were 9 or 10 dollars or (8.XX and 9.XX plus tax that equalted 9 or 10 dollars

One really annoying point is that what they adveertise as a Liter and half liter are not even close.

They should call them small and large, or get authentic German glasses that have a measured line.

Read the beer menu pdf I posted.

There are plenty of pints in the $6.XX and $7.XX range. Are you saying that's inaccurate? (I don't know; I haven't been there in months).

The worst offender at this is Churchkey. For most of the cask beers, their beer menu says "Imperial Pint". But they serve it in a glass which is essentially reminiscent of an "Imperial Pint", only 20% smaller. I suppose they're not aware that an "Imperial pint" is a unit of measure--20 imperial fluid oz to be precise--not a style of glassware.

The pints they serve at Churchkey are--I believe--12 measly *fucking* ounces. Which is utterly ridiculous, and a travesty. I won't complain, however, as I'm afraid they'll cut me off.

I haven't measured, but last time I went to BGH a few months ago, the glasses they were serving were pretty damned close to .5L and 1.0L.

It's tough with the imperials. I'm negotiating with guiness right now, and it's only proper in a 20 ozer. Unless you sell that for 7 or 8 you lose on it. I just don't know the german version of natty bo so the biergarten is in line with their pricing. One of my least favorite things to hear is that something's too expensive for h st.
Curmudgie, couldn't get xingu this week, but i've got a newbone called sessions coming thursday that you might like. We'll talk about bennie and united's other moves.

Does that pretzel really need fries with it? Really now...

I went back in Sept w/ a large group (14 total, I think). I didn't think the price of the food was too out-of-line for the amount of food I got, and it was good. Two of the people in our group had lived in Germany, and approved of the food and beer there.

And for anyone else who was there that night, we were the group singing the German drinking song over and over again. Still don't know the words, but definitely had that song stuck in my head at the end of the night.

Raccoons would probably love that pretzel...but probably not the beer, as they are Wild Irish Rose drinkers.

"I just don't know the german version of natty bo..."

...is Becks. Both US and German versions are nasty.

That place is the wurst.

Yeah, but is it wurst than Hitler?

oboe,

That beer menu you posted has "Summer Specials" on it. It is probably outdated. Also seems heavy on the pilseners and hefes, which I think would be dialed back for fall/winter

I don't have a problem with their beer prices as I think they are in line with any other night spot in DC. I have been to bars where I pay 6 dollars from a Bud Light so I don't mind paying 13-14 for a litter of a good imported beer.

I stopped ordering their food after a few early attempts at it. It just wasn't good enough for the price. I definitely eat before I go. But then again, I am picky about German food.

Which is roughly when they opened, so the prices were probably teasers.

6 dollars for a bud light? that is not common.
