This comes as a surprise to nobody who has looked through the window of this place. There is still a ton of work to be done. There is no way that they have their certificate of occupancy yet.
I am really looking forward to this place opening, because I think it could really add a lot to the neighborhood. However, I think they are risking generating some antipathy if they insist that they will open by NYE and then fail to do so. I would be pissed if I had made NYE plans to go there only to find out they won't be open yet. Fortunately, I don't bother making NYE plans.
Elise, What's the scoop on Toki Underground (1245 H St)? I read Urban Daddy's review yesterday, however their writers makes my stomach hurl and eyes bleed.
Toki Underground is coming very soon. The space looks awesome. I covered them last month in the H Street Life Column in the Hill Rag. Check it out online, or grab a paper copy.
the "origin of smith" section on the smith commons blog, http://www.smithcommonsdc.com, is woefully corny. people aren't "given" the name smith because it's common, they receive it as a surname. they make it sound like smith is a common *first* name. lol. other than that, this place seems interesting.
Smith is the most common surname in the United States, the UK and Australia. Although the name was originally given to those who worked with metal, many later Smiths had no connection to that occupation and simply adopted, or were given the name precisely because of its commonness."
LMAO! Come on, surely they can come up with something better than that...
Super-disappointed by the customer service failure at Smith Commons! Friends & I planned to go there for dinner on NYE. No one answers the phone, and I left 2 messages, and no one returned my calls and they haven't posted any updates on their site. Now we're scrambling to make other NYE plans. Way to engender badwill before they even open.

Wow, nobody saw this coming.

although i suppose there were plenty of people who anglicized their name to "smith", so i suppose those are the adopted smith's they're referring to.
*snark retracted*
