WP: Fruit Bat Review

IMG_6807

The Post has a detailed review of Fruit Bat (1236 H Street). I wrote about the bar when it first opened back in August. I was back again last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. The cocktail menu changes periodically, so I tried out some new offerings. I tasted the drinks of a few friends and was thus able to get a decent sense of the current menu. The banana boat, which involves banana rum and soy milk, was a crowd pleaser. I started with a lychee capirinha, which was refreshing, and the slipped into a dark night (an enjoyable concoction made from whiskey, creme de cacao, and blackberry). I'd definitely recommend the dark night.

I like this place. Good relaxed vibe and friendly bartenders.

If you're stopping in as you wait for a table at GM's, a word of caution -- the host staff at Granville's has gotten into the habit of walking into Fruit Bat and tapping you on the shoulder to tell you that you're table is ready...that's a little too aggressive and jerks you out of the atmosphere you've just started to settle into...

Overall, awesome place and great addition to H St.

So, the host at GM leaves his/her restaurant, comes into another restaurant/bar, remembers your face, approaches you to tell you your table is ready, and... the problem is where? The aggressive shoulder tapping? That your table is ready too quickly?

Consider us cautioned.

Sarcasm noted and amusing.

Put yourself in the shoes of FruitBat. Yes, it's nice that they get overflow business. The point of going to place B is also to experience place B. If you were running FruitBat, would you prefer that GM call the patron (like they are supposed to) or would you prefer that they walk in, make a scene at an intimate bar, and leave --- doing this 4-5 times a night.

That is crazy. The customer service of someone at GM bothering to come tell you face-to-face that your table is ready! And a phone call would be less disruptive - what do you think that does to everyone else's atmosphere for you to take a phone call? I think GM is going above and beyond to come tell you your table is ready and I appreciate that level of customer service. That's just totally ungreatful.

Never mind Fruit Bat having good Irish whisky; when will the Pug have Xingu?

the veggie tacos and sweet 'tater fries were also excellent, esp. when paired with the banana boat.

Saturday night's djs were awesome, as well. Overall, a great night out.

All these taco stands and restaurant openings are great, but do you know what will really change your life? The MFing X9 bus. I just got a pamphlet in the mail that says it is operating. Is this true? Actually I just went to WMATA website and it says it will start Dec 19th. No more stopping twice on one block!!

Wanted to add that for those non-drinkers FB offers a wide range of NA drink that allows you to be social, and have something that tastes good.
