WCP: Tacos Impala, Words to Eat By

DSC_0045

The Washington City Paper has a short, but favorable write-up of Tacos Impala. Tacos Impala is a taco stand located at 1204 H Street (they've taken over the Philadelphia Water Ice Factory space over the winter).  While Tacos Impala doesn't deliver, you can call ahead so your tacos are ready when you arrive. Just call them up at 202-375-0537.

I tried this place. It was okay. I'm rooting for a chicken taco addition, but I had the steak one and it was pretty good.

I'm excited for this. First, for delicious, well made, craving satisfying tacos.

Second....Leasing temporarily unused space will help keep out the squatters and thus homeless space heater fires, no?

Third...this is a model I'd like to try myself (seasonal space to try out a food service business). Kudos for the innovative solution.

The pork tacos are good (but FruitBat's are better), the steak tacos are decent, and the vegetarian tacos....need some work. They don't soak up the booze like a Citipizza slice but they definitely hit the spot post-drinking.

I like this picture, and all three varieties of their tacos.
Fruit bat's pork tacos are really, really good. But they are $9 for two instead of $6 and maybe a tad bit smaller.

How was Toyland this weekend?

I think this is a great concept and I love the Tacos, the steak and pork tacos are delicious and a great late night alternative to Taylor's or Danny's in this area and they're reasonable in price.

If I had known that I could have called ahead I wouldn't have had to stand around in the cold on Saturday at 1 am.

Keep up the great work and I can't wait for Toki Underground to open up!!!

In Mexico and Southern California, where tacos are cheap and plentiful, we would laugh at anyone who paid $6 or $9 for 2 tacos. Rent is no more expensive in DC than SoCal/NoCal, let alone on H Street. And as far as charging for salsa - seriously? Any place with tacos should have a salsa bar for patrons, complete with varying levels of spice and and ranging from runny to chunky. Even Chipolte manages that. For non-beef/pork eaters, a chicken or turkey option is necessary, then perhaps we'll judge more fairly.

As someone who spends time in a place where tacos are cheap and plentiful, these are comparable tacos. Since this is DC where people have more money than where I find cheap and plentiful tacos and because this is the only taco joint of its kind on H st or even Capitol Hill, I'm willing to pay their inflated prices. If tacos become more plentiful then they will be cheaper. So maybe someone should open up a competing joint. Until then, Tacos Impala are the people to see

Tacos are cheaper in Mexico than DC? Thanks for the heads up.

Yes, Fruitbat's pork tacos aren't cheap. No, they're not smaller than Taco Imapala, they may be the best tacos I've had in the DC area, (which is damning with faint praise) and they're made with both pulled pork and chorizo. Taco Imapala is far cheaper and is still good except for the veggie taco, and even then I'll probably give that another shot since it was opening week when I tried it.

Wait, what? Tacos don't cost as much in Mexico or southern California, where they're easy to find? YOU'RE PUTTING ME ON!!!

It sounds kind of expensive, but to put in in perspective, a soft taco at taco bell is $1. Are these three times as good? At least.

That said, I hope the price comes down. If they were $2 each, I'd be eating here several times a week!

Fruit Bats pork taco is definitely much better than TI's. Not saying that I would eat at TI again though.

$ 3.00 for their tacos are a pretty good deal. Their meat portions are generous for the size of the tortilla. Most people don't need to eat the kind of portions that are served in restaurants anyways.

I think the Pug doesn't mind if one decides to take the tacos there and eat them while watching a replay of an Arsenal match. Arsenal!!!!

Tacos were tiny, and, in my opinion, extremely overpriced.

The pork taco I had was super yum. The guy at the window wasn't very friendly, but the delish taco made up for it.

I agree with those that were not big on the veggie taco. I have had all three and the veggie lags way behind. My wife is vegetarian, so with the poor option for her, I won't be going there very often.

The veggie taco isn't as good because there's no pork or beef in there.

I know you're just rolling, but you can make a vegetarian taco every bit as good as a meat one.

I don't roll, I troll. A vegetarian taco can be as good as a steak or a pork one just like a clothespin on your sack can be as good as thumbtacks. Sure, you're getting some sort of sensation out of the deal, but you're kidding yourself that it's anywhere near as gratifying. TUBBS FOR ANC!!!!!!

I'm happy to have more options on H St. NE, especially taco options. They will charge what the market will accommodate and I imagine profits could go into a potential long-term solution. I also find the innovative seasonal use of the space to be an awesome idea. I had the beef and pork and preferred the beef.

BTW, German beer is WAY cheaper in Germany than at Biergarten Haus! Who knew!

What the hell. Our after hours tacos were barely pulled pork! Unacceptable!!!

Ugh...alls I know is that I got thar about 45 minutes after they closed with my friend Yard Bird. There was nary a Mexican in sight; however, there was a chinaman (I think that's the preferred nomenclature) dutifully doing paperwork. I pursued my quest for a "taco" and he resisted at first, but caved in. But, the pulled pork was hardly even "pulled." Just a hunk of succulent, delicious, marinated pig on a soft tortilla to soak up my whiskey from earlier. 3.14179 stars overall.

I only eat the beef tacos, there good, so good I once saw someone punch his drinking buddy in the face for trying to grab his last one. I recommend Tacos Impala to anyone who likes Tacos. After a night of drinking these tacos will keep you warm on the way home.
