In part one of a three part series WTOP looks back on the last night of Alonzo Robinson, a 13 year old boy who was shot in and killed in Trinidad during the summer of 2008. That summer Trinidad erupted in a
bizarre spasm of
violence. The result was
pretty surreal for those of
us living here. Now, close to three years later, Alonzo's alleged killers are headed to court.

Speaking of violence, any word on the series of shots fired at 5th and I last night? I live close by, heard the shots and saw the cops, but have been unable to locate any information about it online. Thanks!
What is the story on the blocks of 16th south of Benning? I haven't seen that many young guys posted on the corners since the 80s crackorama days. Maybe the Mayors and City Council should take a surprise tour of the place in their Navigators. Where the hell are the cops anyway?
MPD had done a good job cleaning up and sitting on those blocks but the cops have been absent for weeks now. Also the garbage on my block hasn't been picked up in over a week. No idea what's going on but all this seems to have developed in the last few weeks, not sure what changed. I hope this doesn't portend a decline a city services.
Something has happened to 1st district police visibility in the 500 block of 14th street too. All the druggie boys and a few new even harder cases, are back to standing on the corners. They had a hummer parked up on the sidewalk last weekend. If the cops had been around, they might have even noticed it.
yep. That block of 14th, as well as 15th around Duncan, 16th on rosedale and 16th near the corner of C. all those spots have been unusually populated the past few weeks by folks ``hanging out.'' and not a squad car in sight like there used to be. I need to make a point of going to the next psa meeting to find out what's happening with the patrols.
Has anyone brought these locations up on the MPD-1D mailing list? I've found the 1D PSA lieutenants, as well as Cmdr Kamperin, to be pretty responsive to problem areas when they've been brought up on the mailing list. It's the fastest way to get problems like this addressed, IMHO.
I live near 16th and Rosedale and tell you that the ones that I see are young teen males who live in the neighborhood. They don't seem to be doing much other than standing around and talking extremely loud. I would prefer that they move it along but there isn't much we can do...they generally disappear at or very close to 11 p.m. when the curfew kicks in. For the record, I think this problem would not be as great if the rec center were open.
I haven't brought it up yet on the listserve but that’s a good idea. I'm always a little hesitant because it's hard to know whether it's just kids hanging out and doing nothing or whether it's people up to no good. I did call 911 on Monday afternoon about a group of guys loitering on rosedale at the entrance to the alley who just gave me a really bad vibe. When I stopped at the end of the block and watched them for a few minutes they started hurling obscenities at me so I decided to keep walking and didn't wait to see if a squad car responded. and I've called a couple times about what is obviously a drug crew near 16th and C.
Most of these guys are not kids studying their SATs on the corner of 14th & Emerald. I'm seeing some pretty hard guys that are not from the hood hanging with a couple of the usuals.
If you ever see any of them doing anything- selling, smoking drugs, etc- please text it in... text what you saw to 50411. It goes through a third party so its completely anonymous and it really works! I text in illegally parked cars, pot smokers, dealers, dog barking complaints, domestic violence, you name it... its a good tool.
Not studying SATs... hehehe. Just go out and tell them to leave. What are they going to do, kill you???
