Take him to the shelter. They can get him properly nourished in addition to placing ads out. He may be put down in a couple months if no one claims or adopts him.
Mason is a 6 year old yellow lab who weighs about 60 lbs. Mason got away from our dog sitter yesterday around 6pm. He was last seen running down C st NE towards Stanton Park. He is friendly towards people (including kids) but can be aggressive towards other dogs if he is afraid. I am with my husband away on a business trip in Texas right now. Putting us in a really helpless role for finding him. Any information from this community would be fantastic. If you see him you can call: DC Animal Control (202) 576-6664 24 hours/day Thank ...
If you just call dc animal control when you find a dog, chances are the person who lost them has already called, and they will connect you. I found a dog last year, called DC animal control, and the owner came over to pick him up in less than 20 minutes!
I think this dog was Mason. My friends brought him to the shelter on NY Ave. The owners were very lucky that my friends found him and took such good care of him!
Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL) does not take in strays. They don't do "animal control" type work like is done at the NY Ave shelter (that's DC Animal Control, run by the Washington Humane Society).
WARL is a private, limited admission shelter, meaning it doesn't have to take in an unwanted animal if the facility doesn't have room or if it thinks the animal isn't a good candidate for adoption. WARL doesn't take in any cats from the public.
At NY Ave, all animals are taken in, regardless of how suitable the animal is for adoption. This is how WARL can be a "no kill" shelter. Don't blame the shelter for the fact that so many people dispose of their dogs and cats -- it is not the shelter workers' fault.
VERY startled and disconcerted by djbays's comment. I forwarded it to WARL and invited them to respond. I hope they do. If it's true, I need to rethink my charitable contribution policy ...
Yep, turned out to be mason! The following morning we brought him into the ny ave shelter and they immediately recognized the missing pup as mason. We are so happy mason has been reunited with his owners.
WARL does good and vital work. The information about it being a limited admission shelter is not a secret -- you can read about it on the organization's website. My previous comments were not meant to be negative towards WARL. Both shelters need your support, be it financial or otherwise.

Can have him scanned for a microchip at any vet. Also post on Craig's List
You can have him scanned for a microchip at the Animal Shelter on NY Ave and also file a found dog report in case someone goes there looking for him.

Take him to the Washington Animal Rescue League. www.warl.org They are a no kill shelter. Considerably better conditions than the NY Ave shelter.
I blame the owner. Why does he not have an ID tag or microchip?

Ignore Brian, the NY Ave shelter is not going to kill this dog and the conditions are just fine.
Both our rescue animals are from the NY Ave shelter and their staff is quite competent.
