Weekend East City Event Round Up: Stay Cool Edition

Don’t let the heat bog you down!  This weather is the perfect excuse for staying indoors and seeing art in a pleasant air conditioned environment. 

Thursday, June 9
Studio H will host a closing party from 6 to 9pm for Mannequin by Ecuadorian Pablo Caviedes. Caviedes is of one the most important Latin American artists of his generation.  This will be your last chance to see this series exhibited in the same space.  Studio H is located at 408a H ST NE.


Friday June 10
On Capitol Hill, Albus Cavus invites you to celebrate the end of school at the Fridge with a year-end party starting at 7pm!  Participants are encouraged to bring musical instruments and refreshments if they wish.  The Fridge is located at 516 1/2 8th Street SE in the alley.

Across the 11th Street Bridge in Anacostia, Honfleur Gallery in conjunction with microWave project present wavelengths. This exhibit brings together four women artists, who have created site-specific installations inspired by the concept of wavelengths.  There will be a special community installation outreach project to help raise awareness and funds for people affected by Japan’s recent tsunami and earthquake.  Honfleur Gallery is located at 1241 Good Hope RD SE.  The opening begins at 7pm and ends at 9pm.

Around the corner, also from 7pm to 9pm, at 2208 MLK Jr. Ave SE, The Gallery at Vivid Solutions will open Ayodamola Okunseinde & Yulia Graham’s collaborative project DOCUMENTS: alternative guide to dc underground. DOCUMENTS investigates subjects of identity through photographic and physically interactive portraits based on the likenesses of artists from the DC metro area.

Saturday June 11
CHAW, The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop located at 545 7th Street SE is hosting two events on Saturday as follows:

First- The Capitol Hill Art League (CHAL) will sponsor a watercolor class for all levels from 1:30 to 4pm.  If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at this medium, this would be the perfect opportunity. $50 includes all supplies and almost three hours of one-on-one instruction. Note: the Saturday morning “Drawing from the Figure” open studio will be CANCELLED this Saturday.

Second- The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop presents its annual Student-Faculty Show featuring the multimedia work of adult students and their instructors.  The opening begins at 5pm and ends at 7pm.

Finally, the Corner Store, Capitol Hill’s hidden treasure, hosts 3by6, featuring six local photographers, each of whom will show three works.  The opening is from 6 to 8pm and will include a live performance by Jazz trIAD.  The Corner Store is located at 900 South Carolina Avenue SE across from Eastern Market Metro.
