Seriously, I thought crime was supposed to slow down in the winter. Last night from what I can tell, there were two armed robberies around Lincoln Park, a taxi-jacking on Benning and this stabbing all within a relatively small area, all within an evening.

I'm not skittish, but I'm starting to feel like it's only a matter of time before I'm the one getting held up.

Maybe it's always been this way and there's just more access to the information (Twitter, blogs, etc)?

no it's not always been this way. look at the stats for psa 103. violent crime is up this year, including a 40% jump in robberies

Does anyone know what time this occurred? I walked down this block around 8:40pm- must have just missed it. I was too busy looking at all the pretty christmas decorations on the block anyway.

The report doesn't say if it was outside or in a home.

It's been VERY warm lately which may account for more violence. It was around 50 degrees at 8pm last night, and we've had a very warm December so far.

This constant stream of crime is really starting to get old. I'm not sure what the answer is. Is it to step up the police presence? I'm sure that will help. But is there anything else that we can/should be doing? I love this neighborhood as much as anyone, but the thought of this happening to someone I know is really making me second guess where I live.

I meant: the thought of this happening to anyone, let alone anyone I know... It shouldn't happen to anyone. Period.

It's probably all of the newcomers to the area who are stabbing and breaking park fences.

Tom, were there no police cars out when you walked by? I walked through around the same time and there were about 8 police cars and a bunch of neighbors outside.

I am not getting these alerts - is there something I am doing wrong? Is everyone else getting these MPD alerts?

I have been seeing the alerts on twitter but I haven't been getting them via text message even though I signed up for them.

Are there gangs in DC?

according to MPD-1 listserv thread, this was a domestic incident inside a residence on the 1500 b/o Gales. Not a random stabbing on the street.

The answer seems simple to me: this is the "holiday season" where there's a constant drumbeat to buy, buy, buy. I imagine this would be the time of year where class resentment would be at its highest, hence the uptick.

It also gets dark earlier in winter and this is the time of year when people are handling large packages/lots of shopping bags and hence are easily distracted/targets.

Keep your eyes open, please, and be safe, everyone.
