Philip Michael Wolfson at Industry Gallery

Don't forget that Industry Gallery (2nd floor of 1358 Florida Ave) has an opening Saturday night. Here's the press release:

Washington, DC March 17- April 28, 2012 PHILIP MICHAEL WOLFSON Animated Unobtainium: Tsukumogami DC Series 1 Born 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of a NASA engineer, Philip Michael Wolfson studied architecture at Cornell University and the Architectural Association, London, England. After completing his studies he spent ten years as head of design for renowned London architect, Zaha Hadid until establishing his own studio in 1991.

Wolfson has established his distinctive pathway, re-examining the forms and ideas of the early 20th century Modernist movements, particularly Constructivism and Futurism. His unique approach to design and art is informed by the dynamics of fracture and fragmentation, layering and manipulating his materials into fluid shapes and forms, where the dynamics of light, shadow and reflection are an integral part of the seduction of the work.

His functional art pieces have been shown at leading international art and design exhibitions such as Art Basel/Miami, and many of his works have been acquired by international collectors and galleries including the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK), the Foundation Cartier (Paris, FR), and the Price Tower Arts Center (Bartlesville, USA).

In his first U.S. solo exhibition at INDUSTRY, Philip Michael Wolfson will exhibit a new series of Tsukumogamis, a type of Japanese "artifact spirit"--living inanimate objects. Tsukumogamis originate from discarded items that have reached their 100th birthday and thus become alive and aware. This experimental study uses Concrete Canvas, which has an innate organic quality and movement.

"The intrinsic life of the material stimulates a conscious awareness of the senses for an immediate response -- modeling and molding the raw flesh-ness of the material from an idea, a thought or feeling, rather than developing the works thru sketch phases, analysis and then development stages."
