Video of 925 9th Street Fire Friday
A reader sent in this video (and a photo) he shot of a house fire on 9th Street. According to the reader, the house was vacant (it may have had squatters), and had fallen into disrepair. The house was largely destroyed in the fire.
Anyone know how to get this place boarded up? We called 311, and after being transferred several times were told that it is the owner's responsibility. However, we haven't seen anyone take responsibility for that unit in years - garbage being thrown out the door into the alley was common. I can't comment on whether the residents were squatting or not, but there has to be a way to board up vacant properties. If anyone has an idea, it would be much appreciated. Otherwise, I guess it's a call to Wells' office this week.
Talk to Reuben Pemberton at DCRA. He is so good at his job that you will not believe that he works for the government. You can reach him at vacantbuildings@dcra.gov or 202.442.4332
every time i walked by that house with my dogs, day or night, the same four guys were sitting out front drinking and getting high. they were friendly, in a hazy, boozey sort of way, but the place was most definitely a real smelly dump. hope the guys weren't hurt but at the same time, i won't feel too bad if this place is fixed up and sold.
Someone came buy Saturday morning looking for the owner to find out if they were willing to sell. He wanted to buy it as is. Word on the street (LOL) is that a woman set the house on fire because she was angry with her boyfriend. I am glad the alcoholics and crackheads are gone.

Boarded up? Probably needs to be demolished now. Hope someone buys the lot and does something nice with it.
