It's been a long time since I heard chatter about the brick and mortar version of popular food truck Chupacabra, but the other day a reader spotted a new paint job at the former auto repair behind Stan's (822 H Street).
@frozentropics Tons of activity @ old garage on 9th St right off H behind Stans. Painting outside, kitchen inside. Chupacabra brick&mortar?I followed up with owner Jason Martin (you might know him from Sticky Rice, Dangerously Delicious Pies, or the Rock & Roll Hotel), and confirmed that it is indeed the start of a future fixed address version of the mobile taco stand (think outdoor seating to chow down on your grub).

SOOO MUCH MEXICAN FOOODDDDD
There is a fair amount of neighborhood opposition to outdoor seating in that location. It's off of H street proper & encroaches into the residential section of the neighborhood.
Interesting. Looks like there is plenty of room in front to have a small outdoor seating area without encroaching on neighbors. Not sure why people would oppose it unless they're worried about late night noise (which is understandable).
Judging by Google Streetview, There might be more room for seating if they moved some of the cars off the sidewalk.
Chupacabra is a Latin Kitchen and Taqueria.
It's mostly a noise concern (the sidewalk is just a few steps from the neighbors' front porches).
This neighborhood is so figgin DELICIOUS! Yay. Now what we need next is Southern Indian (Dosas!), Korean BBQ, Thai, and descent Vietnamese. Yum.
i've seen a chupacabra in the alleys off Benning
Meh. Horace and duckies is in a similar situation (off H), it it has been a destination for decades.
Yea, and I pity/envy the poor/blessed people that are right next door to Horace & Dickey's - smells like fried food day and night plus the noise of everyone eating right outside your house.
I'm sure u pity the Horace and Dickie's neighbors, you thoughtful soul. But.... I don't hear them complaining. Perhaps u should channel ur energies in some other, meaningful, charitable way.
Hmmm?
Part of the problem is that the owners are not being upfront with the ANC about the size of the sidewalk area. They want to have seating for approximately 60 people outside (there is no room for indoor seating) and they need to have at least 8 feet of sidewalk between their seating area and the tree boxes. (Much like Khan's or Cusbah) but they only have 4 feet of sidewalk between their proposed seating area and the tree boxes. They still use plans that are outdated and don't refect the actual area that is being used. They also do not have a trash or noise plan.
I am one of those neighbors and am willing to wait and see. The extra crowds at night might make the block a little safer. Just pick up the trash please!
Are you people serious? That part of H St needs places like this. I live on that block and welcome their presence. They will help bring safety and security to the area.
