I'm curious to see how the "long time resident"/"newcomer" discussion evolves as time goes forward and the "newcomers" from the 90s, 2000s, and 2010s become the "long time residents". When did you arrive in DC? When did you move into the neighborhood?

I moved to DC in 2000. I moved to H Street in 2011.
Arrived in DC in 2007 (when I was 26), in the neighborhood since 2009 (four different houses within a 4-5 block radius).
great question Alan! these survey-type questions are awesome.

Navy transferred me back in 2011, Adams Morgan for nine months, and bought on K Street NE in early 2012. love the feel of the neighborhood, especially this time of year while outside watering the lawn/drinking beer/saying hello to passersby!
Moved to DC and Neighborhood (Rosedale) in 2003
Moved to DC in 2002 and bought near the Atlas District/H Street in 2011.

Moved to DC for college in 2003. Moved to H street in 2010. Rented for a few years, then bought a place a few blocks off H in 2012. Such a wonderful neighborhood!
College in DC from 95-99, one year back home after graduation, then back in DC since 2001. Lived in Glover Park for 7 years and have now been in Trinidad for 6 (since 2008). I would take Trinidad over Glover Park any day. Love it here.
On a related note it drives me crazy when I see comments on Twitter or elsewhere from people complaining about "all the white people at open houses" in Trinidad when they were a white person at an open house not that long ago when they bought their house. Just because you bought your house a couple years earlier and for $100K less doesn't make you superior. /rant
Born and Raised in Washington DC. Bought a place in SE in 2006. Moved to 4TH ST NE (NOMA Area) in 2011.
2007 Black gentrifier checking in.
Moved to DC/Trinidad in 2009 and bought a place 2 blocks away in 2012.
I forgot to answer the question(s) myself (LOL).
I moved to DC in 93 and bought in the neighborhood (still can't bring myself to say Atlas District*, sorry) in 2003.
* with all due respect to everyone marketing the Atlas District
Does anyone know what the neighborhood north of H, but south of Florida, was called, historically? I've seen Old City, I've seen Near Northeast. Is there any consensus?
I think Old City encompasses more than just that sliver (where i live). I think Near Northeast actually starts north of G Street (where Capitol Hill ends), vice North of H Street
Moved to DC and the neighborhood in 2003.
Moved to DC 2004. Lived in Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, and Mt Pleasant. When I decided to buy I looked all over town and H Street was the clear winner for neighborhood and value. Bought a house in Rosedale in 2010 and haven't looked back.
DC in 1995 and bought near H in 1999.
I moved to DC in 1994, lived in various Cap Hill apartments then bought north of H on the western end in 2004.
Moved to DC area (VA) in 2002. Logan in 2006. East H in 2011.
Moved to Stanton Park in 1998. Bought off H in 2004.
DC in 2001. Bought in Trinidad in 2005.
Trinidad in 2010 and couldn't be happier!
I moved to DC in August 2005 and to H Street in Sept 2007.
Moved to DC August 23, 2001. Lived over at 11th & I Street until I bought my house in Trinidad in the spring of 2003.
Moved to DC in February 2014 and have been living in my home on the east end ever since ;)
Moved to DC in 1970, moved to the 13th & H street area in 1997. Moving to this community(from far Southeast) was made possible by Marion Barry, who ran the city into the ground. Every city agency was in court receivership except parks and recreation. People were leaving the city in droves and it made real estate cheap. In those day, NE stood for "never exists" for city services.
I moved to the area (Old Town Alexandria) in the summer of 2005 and spent the next 5 1/2 years living in various parts of DC and Northern Virginia (culminating with three torturous years in Annandale while we saved up for our downpayment). We bought our house in Capitol Hill in early 2011 and have been there ever since; but I've been working in the area since 2006.
unless you are a Potowmack indian,
you are all a bunch of newcomers.
But for what it's worth, we bought in 2011.
Black gentrifying family that bought in Trinidad in 2010/2011.
I've lived in DC off and on since 2000. I moved to NoMa in 2011.
Moved to the region in 2007 - purchased in Rosedale in 2011. Best Investment Ever!
Lots of Rosedale representing in this thread!
Moved to DC in 1993, to F St NE in 2004
I moved to 12th and I st in 2004. Moved to Gales St in 2011. Couldn't afford to buy in the neighborhood so moved to Deanwood in January 2014.
Moved to DC in 2010, bought in Trinidad in 2013.
Moved to the DC Metro Area in 2007, but couldn't afford renting in the District with a dog until last year. Came straight to H street.
my husband (then boyfriend) moved to H st in 2009, I moved to DC in 2012 and we relocated to Petworth for a year, now we're back. We missed H St.
My other half moved to DC with her family sometime around 1982 or so; she went away for college and some time after college, but was in DC for most of that time (and most of that on the Hill). I moved to the DC area in 2001, but not into DC until 2006 when we bought a house together a few blocks south of H.
Bought in Trinidad in 2005 and just bought my 2nd(now primary) home here again in Trinidad.
I moved to DC in Sept of 2005 and lived in Columbia Height. I moved to 6th & H St Oct/Nov of 2005. I moved out and bought a place in Kingman Park July/Aug 2013.
alan, the area north of H St, south of Florida historically is called Swampoodle. Right?
Swampoodle was limited to the area near Gonzaga, not sure what east of that was called. I still have a real estate mailer from 2003 or so that tried to dub the neighborhood "SoFlo".
Born and raised in DC*, bought in 2001 a block from what used to be the Children's Museum. House next door had just been vacated by squatters and crackheads were filling the void. a few things I miss, a lot of things I don't.
Moved to DC in 2004. Lived at 1st and O NW and then purchased in Anacostia in 2005. Moved to 3rd and K NE in 2012.
Born in NW DC in 1970, moved to Capitol Hill in 1993, bought south of H St in 2001.
Mark and I bought our first house in Logan circle for 84K in 1984. We sold it in 1989 for 130K. We thought "woohoo" at the time. Well, that tiny 900 sqft, 2 bdrm Victorian sold last year for 899K. Jeeze! Since '89, we've moved in and out of DC and the DC area four more times as Mark's military career kept us transferring to and fro. When we returned to DC in 2011 from 4 years living overseas, we bought our place on K street after being told we were priced out of anything other than a studio in Logan. Turned out to be an excellent choice. We love
our neighbors and have not felt this tight sense of community since living in Logan back then. Some days I get frustrated with some of the ridiculousness I see out my window, but I try to remember how Logan was in the 80's, with the rampant drugs and dozens of hookers and I figure
I can deal with the mindless littering and occasional ahole calling me an old honky bitch on the X2.
Moved to DC in 2009 and lived in a group house in Columbia Heights, bought in Trinidad in 2011. My partner lived in Columbia Heights 2004-2007, then Chinatown, then moved in with me. We're both chasing the hipsters east.
Moved to DC in 1985 and moved out in 1997. Moved back in 2010 and am still here. Long-term resident, interrupted.
I moved to DC from Ithaca, NY in 1991. Rented a basement apartment in Adams Morgan, then 7 years in a Dupont Circle condo, and the last 13 as a homeowner in Mt. Pleasant.
Coming up on 10 years in the District, 6 of those on 6th St. NE, the best street in the city!
Arrived in DC in 1976 and moved to 11th and H NE in 1978...no joke.
We bought at K and 10th NE area in 2004
Moved to U Street in 2005 and then to NoMA with the boyfriend in 2010. He'd lived all over before - Columbia Heights, Eastern Market, Armory, Southwest...
I moved to the 600 block of 12th st ne in 1981 and have seen the huge change in the last several years. Can't say I like the parking situation though. Why doesn't the city build some parking garages if it is going to promote all these hipster bars on H st? Seeing all the Va and Md liscenses on cars parked on surounding streets, those people aren't going to ride the streetcar to nowhere to get here now are they.
dc native.....moved to H in 2009.
Arrived to DC in 1995 and purchased my home in 1999. I paid 100k and that was alot of money back then. My neighbors thought I was crazy for paying that much for a rowhouse. Its amazing to see the progression year after year.
Originally moved to DC area in 1994 and bounced around the suburbs for a while. Lived in Columbia Heights before the development there, until 2002, when I left DC for a bit. Moved back and bought in Trinidad in 2008. No regrets!
I bought my house from a white woman who had lived in the house since 1980. She was a librarian at Gallaudet until she retired. No gentrifying here.
I am a 2nd generation Washingtonian. Born in the 60's raised in the Silver Coast area of the city which is located in Ward 7. That's the area referred that includes Penn Branch, Fort Dupont and Hillcrest area of SE DC.
Currently live on "G" St NE in the residence that was owned by my grandparents since the 1940's. I renovated and officially moved in to the house in 2013.
I moved to H St in 2008 and have been in love ever since.
Fairfax in 2003, on the Hill in 2004, moved in West End H st 2005
I moved to DC in 2002 and lived in NW until 2011 when I bought my first house in the Carver-Langston neighborhood. I sold after living there 1.5 years and bought on the west end of H with my partner. Best decision ever and definitely glad we pulled it off when we did because now we'd never be able to afford the neighborhood we're in.
Moved to DC in 2002 (Adams Morgan rental) then bought in the North Lincoln Park/Kingman Field area in 2003.
After ten years, I started to refer to myself as a local.
Moved to DC in 1999 (not counting time spent here in college). Moved a block off H St. in 2006.
DC in 2002 -- Logan Circle
2004 -- Hill East
2009 -- Bought at 12th/I
2011 -- Bought in Trinidad and currently there
No regrets on any of the moves. The further out east I go, the better it gets.
moved to dc in 2009, moved to trinidad in 2011 (loved it!) and am now still on h but closer down towards union.
