ANC 6A Meeting Agenda for 2/12

I recently posted agendas for some meetings in ANC 5D, so I thought I'd be fair and post the one for the upcoming ANC 6A mtg (something I used to be in the habit of doing anyway). As you can see, ANC 6A has much more detailed agendas than ANC 5D, so I just took screen shots. It you can't read this you can download the entire agenda in pdf form.

Agendas like that, and the degree to which they're adhered-to, are a legacy of the Joe Fengler era in ANC6A, and are a big reason why 6A has consistently been considered the most effective ANC in the city for 10 years or more.

The chairperson in 5D needs to step up their agenda game. 6C serves as a good model for us but it would have to be adapted to fit what all 5D residents want and deserve. For starters we need a Transportation/Public Space Committee so that we can get more capital bikeshare access on the eastern side of 5D. This is would bring affordable transportation to our neighborhood and bring our residents easy access to the Orange/Blue/Silver lines at Stadium Armory which would be a short bike ride if there was a bikeshare stop along Benning road somewhere near 19th st. The unused Streetcar stop would be an ideal place for this since it has already been built but will never be put to use for its intended purpose.

Also, if we started Parks and Events Committee we could start having events like Carver/Lanston Day or Trinidad Day where we celebrate our neighborhoods heritage and while forging a stronger since of community over some BBQ with neighbors and friends. Heck, if we started having better written agendas and legit committees a community garden would also likely become a reality and we could teach the children how to eat healthy while showing them how to live life being mindful of their relationship to mother nature. Also, we should be bold enough to take a stand for democracy and DC Home Rule and start an ANC 5D Prop 71 garden.

If we had Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Committee Benning Road and Bladensburg Road could become the new H St. I'm thinking Beer Gardens, Martin/Jazz clubs, a Dive Bar or two and perhaps even a Cigar Lounge with a fancy hard wood bar. This of course would also require a Planning, Zoning, and Economic Development Committee to cajole entrepreneurs into investing in our community.

Ultimately, all I am saying is there is a lot of unused and underused space in the area that we could have developers putting up luxury condos right now. We need to get those condos up so that the shuttered businesses will reopen on Benning and Bladensburg Roads bringing jobs back to our community. We have the ability to shape our communities future to fulfill our wildest dreams in a way that longtime residents and our newer arrivals can all agree on but we need to start by getting our stuff together at the 5D ANC meetings. Lets all rise to challenge with positivity and class.
