Burglar Caught on Tape, Comes Back for Seconds

A local couple caught a burglar on tape as he entered their house and looked for items to steal. The door had inadvertently been left unlocked by houseguests. It happened May 15th, at about 2:30pm on a Friday afternoon. What appears to be the same man returns ten days later knocks on the door and behaves suspiciously (takes a few steps, but keeps looking back at the door) after hearing a dog barking.

A slightly edited version of the full narrative appears below:

My husband and I were burglarized on May 15th. We caught the guy on our home security camera. Unfortunately, he returned to our residence on Monday May 15th. We caught him on camera again! May 26th, our neighbor spotted him AGAIN! He keeps returning to the area and he's up to no good. Casing residences... etc. We've sent word to our immediate neighbors but it may not be a bad idea to pass it around to reach a larger audience. He tends to be on foot, alone, and come by in the afternoons.

First Sighting and burglary: The suspect first came by our place near 9th and K Sts NE Friday, May 15th, around 2:30pm. You'll see in the attached video that he enters the residence (door was left inadvertently unlocked by house guests), is initially scared because one of our dogs makes a noise, leaves out the front door, and then returns. He goes directly upstairs and takes two laptops, a camera, and three pairs of sunglasses all in a bag of baby clothes (baby clothes were later discarded on 10th St NE).

S
econd sighting: We saw him again on our property (and caught him on video because we moved the camera to face out the window to our porch) Monday, May 25th, around 3pm. We believe it is the same individual. You can see in the video that he knocks on the front door gently. We were home at the time. The dogs react and he turns around to walk away, but not before looking back to the residence (likely to verify if anyone was coming down the stairs - which my husband did.) my husband followed him down L St NE to further identify the suspect and then returned to the residence to call the police.

Third sighting: May 26th, our neighbor saw him on foot (we have sent the videos and pictures to all our neighbors) around 6:30pm. He followed the suspect down L St NE. Our neighbor contacted my husband via text message stating that he believed he had spotted the suspect and he was behaving suspiciously in the neighborhood - likely casing residences. My husband picked our neighbor up by vehicle and they followed him all the way to Eckington and took videos and pictures. I later met up with them on bike and we called the police.

Our case number is 15-070680.

Yeah, maybe next time he could steal the gun and then be armed.

What a surprise a B/M. And to think we have people who want shorter sentences for these thugs. He's in the neighborhood often. I've seen him around as well and my husband scared him away from our home before.

Rand Paul was right about crime it is committed by the soulless who live here.

"There is crime going on all across America. It is not a racial thing, it is a spiritual problem" These criminals lives dont matter because they have no souls

It'd be my pleasure to shoot one of these thugs the moment they stepped through the door.

And of course it's a B/M, because he can't get a job or try to better his life, nah, it's better to sit on his ass and steal from people who actually fucking work for a living.

If no one will give you a decent job and rents and iPhones are expensive! What is a man supposed to do ? You seem to have all the answers. A B/M cant make a living doesnt mean he just stops living. You are lucky enough (yeah it is luck) to have a decent job , why dont you try living without an income and see how fast you start crimeing....bitch!

10:33:00 PM, "give you a decent job", "You are lucky enough (yeah it is luck) to have a decent job". EARN THAT SHIT. It isn't about luck. It's about skill, and earning an education. The only think UNlucky is not being born into money, or having a stable family life, or good parents. Also, why do you need an iPhone? Are you serious? Just get a flip phone. No one needs an iPhone. Get rid of that victim mentality. Earn a decent life. Don't steal it from others who have Earned it. It wasn't given to them.

@08:01 I know people with a college degree and they wait tables. I ask you this seriously at what point would you get angry? When you cant afford a reliable car,or when you cant pay a dentist or when you have to share an apartment even after working 60 hours a week? It is easy to say awww just give up your phone when you can afford to make that choice, but when you cant even afford a phone and you still work full time with a degree......you are lucky and only fool thinks is all it takes is hard work in America. All it takes is hard work just to keep living with no phone, car, teeth or even your own room

Yes people take the easy way and resort to crime , but the alternative is a very shitty life

it's hard to get fingerprints, harder then you imagine, but sure, they can try to get some prints.

more likely a roving patrol can pick him up.

i know a bunch of people with Master's degrees and they're still waiting tables, but I know no matter how shitty they feel about their current situation, their debts, the overwhelming desire to have the latest phone, I know they would rather live a shitty life than break into someone home

just cause you royally messed up in high school for whatever reason, doesn't mean you have to work as a dishwasher. there's always community college classes, trade schools, online education. you don't need a college education to run a business. i know of an electrician who last month made more than what I make in my yearly salary. in fact, how far will just a BA from a non-ivy league school will get you in this town? not far, most of us who have average BA's who have made it to high paying jobs had to go through extra lengths to make it here.

Since we're talking about education, I wanted to bring up that UDC offers Workforce Development classes FREE for District residents. They offer several different tracks, including Hospitality, Healthcare, Construction, and other skilled trades. The courses are often scheduled in the evenings, to accommodate working students. You have to pass an aptitude test (pretty basic language & math, and they'll tutor you if you can't pass it) to enroll, and sometimes courses fill up, but they offer the same curriculum in the spring, summer, and fall, so you can always sign up for next semester's courses if the current ones are full. It is a great resource for people looking to improve their hire-ability or break into a new field. http://cc.udc.edu/wd

(I'm not casting aspersions on people who did not finish High School OR endorsing the "BOOTSTRAPS!" argument others are bringing up. I just want people to know these programs are out there!)
