We had a pretty violent weekend starting with a stabbing (1600 block of 19th Street, green) just after 1:30pm Friday afternoon, followed by a second stabbing blocks away (700 block of 21st Street, yellow) later that night. Early Saturday afternoon we had two shootings, one in the 1400 block of Florida Avenue (red), and one in the 800 block of Bladensburg Road (blue). The victims in all four cases were found conscious and breathing. Sunday morning two men robbed the Pizza Hut at Hechinger Mall at gunpoint (purple star). These are just the reports of shootings and stabbings, plus a robbery of an establishment. It doesn't capture every mugging or assault that occurred in the area in recent days. There is always a spike in crime when it starts to get warm outside.
We need the police to play a more active role in crime prevention in this 4-block radius. This wasn't a 3am club fight - this was a hit at noon! Anyone have ideas on how we can engage the police in a conversation about prevention in this neighborhood? (I'm being earnest and haven't participated in the local politics of our neighborhood, yet...so, please no snark.)
thugs will be thugs...
The police are not supposed to be super heroes to protect people. Their job is to show up after the fact, investigate, and arrest the guilty parties. Not to be out actively tackling dudes with knives. It's simply not realistically possible for the police to be everywhere. You have to take care of yourself.
What I would like is to know if the police are following up on these cases with anything other than filing a report. How about finding some of these criminals and arresting them? That might prevent them from stabbing someone else or robbing a different store next weekend. That is the kind of policing that we need.
We need more competent policing not simply more police. You are never going to be able to have a cop in a patrol car every 200 feet and "prevent" all the crime. I wouldn't even want to live in a police state like that anyway. What we need more investigators on the police force not patrolmen. All patrolmen do is end up harassing normal people over silly regulations and writing tickets. They are easy enough for real criminals to avoid. What we need is personnel tasked to spend the necessary time, following up, investigating, and solving real crimes such as robberies, burglaries, assaults, etc.
Hasn't the Mayor paid them not to commit crime? Maybe it was because they were punished harshly for their first crime and this is just their second? You working class people just do not understand the difficulties faced by felons. If felons could vote then they would feel that they are a part of society. I am sick of all the victims complaining when you don't know how hard it is to be an oppressed member of society with no alternatives.
Is there any good reason not to string these people up?
@4:42 The System turned these men into criminals and killing and lynching and incarcerating days are over. Time for new management and your suggestions for Policing are not welcome anymore
This is what Policing has gotten us : Source Wapo
"The criminalization of Black girls is much more than a street phenomenon,” Morris writes. “It has extended into our schools, disrupting one of the most important protective factors in a girl’s life: her education. “Morris has spent more than 20 years working at the intersection of gender, race and education. She’s the former vice president for economic programs, advocacy and research at the NAACP and a former college professor. For this book, she spent four years researching how race and gender-based discrimination in U.S. public schools and criminal justice systems in six big cities from San Francisco to New York affect black girls — in part by interviewing young women, age 15 to 23.Ultimately, she concludes that too many schools are not sensitive to the unique needs and challenges of black girls. As a result, she says, they treat black girls with one brush, enforcing punitive disciplinary policies that send far too many into the juvenile justice system.
@anon1202 "the system turned these men into criminals", lol, get your head right man you are a joke. What system? The system of their 15 year old single mothers who raised them without any sense?
Also, what the hell lynchings are you talking about? It's 2016, I doubt has been lynching with a 100 miles of here in the last hundred years. Might be time to stop trying to excuse your criminal behavior with that one. Grow up and man up.
Also, please tell your friends to come up with a better plan to get money than robbing a pizza hut. I mean are you literally retarded? Armed robbery, that's like mandatory minimum 5 years, for what? How much cash does Pizza Hut actually have on hand on any given day? A couple hundred maybe, best case if you are lucky. Again it's 2016 most people have these things called credit and debit cards now that they use to pay for everything.
Too stupid to even figure out how to commit crime right. yeeash...
Carry a gun and learn how to shoot. That's how we stop crime.
Kate,
You might look into attending your local PSA meetings (better attended and in some areas than others), and your local ANC meetings (MPD reps are there to deliver the crime report, and you can hear a bit about upcoming strategies). If you live in Trinidad you can also try the Trinidad Neighborhood Association meetings.
