The Capital Fringe Festival kicks off today, and they've got live music from Joe Keys "The Late Bloomer Band," and an art show opening to celebrate (7-11 p.m., 1358 Florida Avenue). The Festival, which features a wide variety of productions staged at venues throughout the District, runs through July 31st. The food truck Pan Canteen will be there.

In a land far, far away (actually Paris) an artist is doing something interesting with discarded mattresses like the ones that pop up mysteriously in so many local alleys, and Slate has a story on it.

Tickets ($7) are still available for tonight's Dalmore single malt scotch tasting at Little Miss Whiskey's (1104 H Street). The tasting starts at 7:30 p.m. and features the following selections:

  • Dalmore 12 Year
  • Dalmore 15 Year
  • Dalmore 18 Year
  • Dalmore Cigar Malt
