ANC Election Results

I know many of us are still reeling from presidential shocker last night, but we also have results for some important local races. Here's what happened with some area Advisory Neighborhood Commissions.

ANC 5D

The Commission stays largely the same, but with one big difference. Commissioner Adam Roberts, who is also the Commission's chair, lost his bid for re-election to challenger James Butler.

Commissioner Roberts deserved to go. Just like I said in the previous post his motives came off as egoistic. He was absent in the community, maybe not in the blogosphere and twitter, but in the actual community he was absent. His boyfriend was always the one doing all the talking on his behalf, which almost seemed strategic, but it backfired because we didn't get a chance to see who former commissioner Roberts really was. Ultimately, when your not sincere people will recognize it. And even if you create a larger than life online persona eventually people will catch on.

7:08,
I have to say this really sounds a lot more like you're describing the other candidate for the ANC 5D03 seat. I certainly don't make judgements on someone's involvement in the community based on "the blogosphere and twitter." He's out there a lot, and he's also going to meetings, snd writing letters and emails, testifying at hearings, and more. He's a hardworking guy, not a resume polisher.

I agree with inked. Sounds like anonymous (or butler) was not at meetings he led or attended or out cleaning sidewalks in the actual community with him as some of us were.

You won't find sincerity in Butler either. Good luck with that.

@inked. I am just speaking from my perspective as someone who has lived in this community for many years. Initially, I had high hopes for Roberts. I voted for him during the last election but he has let me down. In my opinion his performance has been mediocre at best. As commissioner chair he didn't solve the budget issue. His visibility, from my perspective, was lacking. And when his neighbor was evicted from his home, where he lived for 30 plus years, due to tax liens, I didn't see Roberts offer his support. And as far as other 5D03 candidate is concerned, he isn't all that great either but he beat Roberts. That just goes to show how much of a mediocre weak, and egoistic candidate Roberts was.

I assure you I am not James Butler. Im just informed community member stating my opinion. I think we have to be critical on our incumbents for the greater good of the community. Incumbents often get a free pass and are not evaluated on their performance as they should be.

8:13,
To which specific budget issue are you referring? Because there have definitely been multiple financial concerns.

People have described Butler as quite personable, but you need a lot more than glad handing to actually do the job. It's good to look critically at an incumbent's performance, but Roberts' challenger seems especially ill qualified for the position. Butler lives at the Flats, and thus knew a lot of people who might not normally encounter Roberts because they live in a large apartment development. Butler paid for signs bearing his face, and hung them all around. He also rented a booth at the H Street Festival. And finally, he managed to get the first on the ballot position. I'd say those are the big reasons Roberts lost.

@inked why didn't Roberts pay for signs bearing his face? Im not hopping on the Butler ban wagon. My point is that if Roberts was as great as the internet claims, he would of won. I was referring to the ANC5D budget.

9:28,

Roberts did have signs, but I don't think he had as many.

I understand that you meant the ANC 5D budget, I'm just not sure which ANC 5D budget issue you are referencing. I swear I'm not trying to be obtuse, they really just have faced multiple issues with their finances, some of which have been resolved.

Roberts did not have many big signs but he did mail to every address a newsletter with accomplishments from his term and had door knockers. If people need a picture of a face in lieu of information that is another issue. Butler has not said what he would do other than be visible. I guess big photos of him everywhere accomplished that.

Sadly, there are so few people that even attend meetings or pay attention to what goes on in the neighborhood and vote based on an image or first on the ballot. Also many votes were from Butler's neighbors that rent in the big apartment building (most of whom have probably rarely, if ever, set foot in the area behind 17th Street).

Just like votes for the president elect, you reap what you sow.

How about that new school board president? A Trump supporter won the election with the help of insider Ward 6 democrats.

Pretty much this is all move the election has been settled then come in as long as there is no reason to debate further. We have to now unified come together for the best in the area. While I do not believe that Roberts was a lackluster ANC commissioner the people have spoken. We need to MoveOn locally and actually we need to move on. There is no profit in the re-litigating an election there is no use in challenging hey voters opinion of someone they voted for and then did not support to use later. Clearly something went off the rails and when this blogger and others fail to see what may be playing to the citizens in that single member district then perhaps this blogger and those rallying are out of touch. It matters not because the election this out.

Does anyone know when will the new commissioners will elect next year's chairperson? Will it be at the next Tuesday meeting (11/15)?

inked said...

9:14,
The new commissioners won't be sworn in until January, and they typically hold officer elections at the January meeting.

James Butler is a criminal who should be in prison. See a recent (November 2016) Board on Professional Responsibility Report recommending to the District of Columbia Court of Appeals that Mr. Butler NOT be reinstated to the practice of law. The report details his long history of theft and lies, which caused him to be disbarred in 2009.
