Submitted for your approval, one video from local resident vplus that shows a bright (and loud) explosion in the sky as shown from a front porch on 9th Street between I and K Streets NE (view is towards 10th Street NE). Vplus indicates that the explosion happened just before midnight on Wednesday (11:57:28 p.m. ET on 9/27/17). The explosion looks a lot like a blown transformer, but vplus says there isn't any electrical wiring or anything it in the approximate location of that explosion. I checked the satellite view on Google Maps and I also did not see anything like that.

Obviously, it could be a very loud firework, but look at this screenshot I took. It seems very bright for a firework, but maybe that's just the Nest camera? What is this? Lightning striking something? Perhaps it's something further away. Did you hear the sound of an explosion just before midnight Wednesday?

If you look at the ground by the fence, you can see that the light source floods the yard/porch and is definitely coming from the 'explosion'. It does seem to be a little bright to be a firework. It reminds me of those flares that military planes drop for lighting/distraction. Maybe one fell from a plane? It could be some sort of flare.... Are there shotspotters in the area? Odd indeed...
We heard this when it occurred, and went outside to look around. We're at ~12th and E, so it was pretty loud.
