Local Transit: Knife Wielding Man Threatens X2 Driver, Streetcar May Get Benning Extension
Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689, which represents WMATA operators and other employees, says a passenger on an X2 bus pulled a knife and threatened to kill the driver yesterday morning near 8th & H Street NE. The report posted to the union's website indicates that the suspect, Davon Abney, brandished a knife while he reached around the protective barrier meant to shield bus drivers from aggressive passengers. According to the post Abney is a repeat fare evader who has previously spit on multiple bus drivers, and even produced a gun in the past. Abney sure sounds like a stand-up guy.
Speaking of assaults on X2 drivers, the woman recently arrested for tossing her own urine onto a driver was re-arrested this past Friday after she failed to show up for a scheduled court appearance. Now NBC4 is reporting that the woman, Opal Brown, has tested positive for PCP in court ordered drug tests.
In other transit news the Washington Business Journal reports that the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) issued a Request for Qualifications for engineering consulting services for the extension of the streetcar to the Benning Road Metro station.
