Zine & Collage Making & a Pop-Up Library Tonight as Part of SAMASAMA at Shopkeepers

Catch the 2nd Annual SAMASAMA Art Show & Gathering at Shopkeepers (1231 Florida Ave. NE). The opening reception was last night, but you can still enjoy the art and events through May 6th. It's "a volunteer run exhibition held in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May at Shopkeepers. This show will present original work by artists of color from diaspora communities. The theme of the exhibit is bayanihan, which refers to the spirit of communal unity, work, and cooperation to achieve a particular goal." Check out the full list of participating artists.





Tonight (6–9pm) on the second floor the DC Public Library will host a DIY zine making session and a pop-up library highlighting Asian Pacific Islander authors. They will have items available for check out, so bring your library card. Those who don't yet have a library card can register for one at the event. There will also be guest authors selling their own self-published or handmade books. Head downstairs where artist Jamila Zahra Felton, of The Beat of Blossoms, will lead a collage workshop.

It's all free but you need to register online. Suggested $5-20 donation accepted at the door, but no one will be turned away. Food and drink provided by Maketto will be available for sale at events. If you can't get tickets walk-ins are welcome to check out the library, peruse the shop, enjoy the food and view the gallery.
