Frightening (and Not So Scary) Films in Rosedale
Catch Get Out (2017) tonight at the Rosedale Recreation Center (1701 Gales St. NE) tonight as part of the Rosedale Library's FrightFlix series. I'm pretty sure most of you have probably seen this movie, but here's your chance if not. Rated R with a run time of 1 hour and 44 minutes. The film starts at 6pm (Tuesday, Oct. 23). Free.

For the younger set the library will show Hocus Pocus (1993) on Thursday (this time actually at the Rosedale library, 1701 Gales St. NE). Teens who relocate to Salem, Mass. explore an abandoned house with a new friend. After dismissing a legend one of them accidentally frees a coven of witches who once inhabited the house. Can the teens use a magical cat and a book of spells to stop the witches from becoming immortal? Rated PG. Run time 1 hour and 36 minutes. The movie starts at 6pm (Thursday, Oct. 25). Free.

Rain Illumination in NoMa
Thursday might be a bit chilly, but it's also the night NoMa will turn on the lights for Rain. Rain is the art installation under the M Street NE overpass. Watch as they flip a switch and "4,000 hanging polycarbonate rods provide the underpass sidewalks with a soft, gently pulsing blue-white glow that evokes the sensation of falling rain." The ceremony will include light refreshments and a chance to explore the exhibit in its fully glory for the first time. 6:30–7:30pm (Thursday, Oct. 25). The event is free, and you can RSVP to let the organizers know you plan to attend.

OAKtoberfest at the Arboretum
OAKtoberfest returns for a second year to the US National Arboretum (3501 New York Ave. NE, or 24th & R St. NE) this Saturday (Oct. 27). Enjoy festivities from 8am–4pm. The day starts off with a 5k fun run (registration deadline has passed), followed by shopping at the Vendor Village beginning at 10am.  Pick up gifts for yourself or others. You'll find: garden art, planters, garden tools, nature-inspired prints, cards and jewelry, plant-based wearable scents, soaps and lotions, orchids, and more. Work up an appetite and enjoy offerings from food trucks. There will also be a beer garden featuring beverages from Supreme Core Cider, Right Proper Brewery, and the South African wine distributor Lubanzi.

Pre-register for classes to learn to climb one of the Arboretum's majestic oak trees ($25, you must be at least 6 years old to climb, all safety equipment provided). 10am–4pm. Sign up for yoga and a hike (pre-registration required, 10am–12pm). The Washington Youth Garden will hold an all day scavenger hunt. A ton of other events and attractions are set for the day, including a children's costume parade, nature walks and tours, and live music. Take a look at all of your options ahead of time as some of the other events will also require you to pre-register.
