Mehari Sequar Gallery Opens Tomorrow w/the Works of Artist Jamilla Okubo

SMALLSOMWTHIBNG

East City Art alerted me that H Street NE has a new 1,400 square foot art gallery that will hold its first opening tomorrow from 8–11pm. Mehari Sequar Gallery (1402 H St. NE) is an independent gallery dedicated to articulating global narratives by examining the world through art. Their first show, “Ain't going to tell you no story, Ain't going to tell you no lie,” highlights the mixed media works of Jamilla Okubo. Okubo's work "explores the folklore and proverbs of daily life in Black America. Experiential context sets the stage of Okubo’s paintings, with imagery that offers partial view of protected spaces where tales and talk circulated, enabling the passing on of wisdom through stories." Okubo's work will remain on view through June 7.

Artist profile from the gallery website:

Born and raised in Washington, DC, of African-American, Kenyan, and Trinidadian descent, Okubo graduated from Duke Ellington School of the Arts, before continuing her studies at Parsons the New School for Design. As a visual artist, surface designer, and illustrator, her work has consistent themes that explore the intricacy of belonging to an American, Kenyan, and Trinidadian identity. She aims to use her interdisciplinary concentration as a medium to weave together stories of the African diaspora. Okubo’s art practice takes on ways to document and archive stories, moments, and ways of expression.

Okubo currently lives and works in Washington, DC. Okubo has recently collaborated with Christian Dior on their Lady Bag Project. She has also illustrated a children’s book with Shout Mouse Press, collaborated with The Line Hotel on a public art project. Currently on display “When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you” is a 20-foot interactive and third dimensional installation, located in Hudson Yards New York.
