Cultivate the City is hosting the inaugural D.C. Strawberry Festival this Saturday at H Street Farms on the roof of W.S. Jenks & Son Hardware (910 Bladensburg Road NE) and it's going to be quite the family/pet friendly occasion. The event celebrates Cultivate's early summer strawberry harvest, urban agriculture, and food access in the tradition of rural strawberry festivals across the country.
Hosted at H St. Farms on the rooftop of W.S. Jenks, they will have a full day of fun contests, classes, cooking, games and, of course, lots of strawberries. Local vendors and community members will be there too. W.S. Jenks and Son is hosting a concurrent Green Egg Dealer Day from 11am–2pm so there will be food available for all during this time. All registered attendees are eligible for 10 percent off any Big Green Egg products. The promotion runs through 6/22. You must sign up and attend the event to qualify for the discount.
Join for the whole day, or just show up part of the festivities. The lineup of events below is subject to change, but the festival looks awesome. Door prizes will be given out throughout the day and there will be free raffle tickets for all (additional tickets available for purchase for $1 each). The raffle will be conducted at the end of the event (~3:45-4pm). The Eventbrite page lists the various vendors and sponsors.
Events
- 9am - Aquaponics Operation & Growth 101 Class
- Led by Brian Filipowich of Anacostia Aquaponics
- Register for class separately (fee of $44)
- 10am - Opening remarks by Niraj Ray of Cultivate the City
- Intro to vendors & welcome. First, 25 attendees will get a free strawberry plant to add to their garden. Door prizes begin.
- 10:30am - Fish Naming Contest
- Submit names for the fish-naming contest for our Cultivate's new aquaponic rooftop garden.
- 10:45am - Vote on names for fish followed by a naming ceremony.
- 11am–2pm - Big Green Egg Dealer Day at WS JENKS
- Free BBQ and Food- All registered attendees are also eligible for 10 percent off any Big Green Egg products. Promotion runs through 6/22. Must signup and attend the event to qualify for the discount.
- 11am - Jam (Making) Session
- Learn how to make your own, taste some of our or take some home to share with your friends and family!
- 11am - Guess the Strawberries' Weight Contest
- Entries open for guessing the weight of strawberries in a bowl - winner gets a $20 gift card for fresh produce!
- 11:30am - Reading of Karla the Dog and Urban Gardening by CQ Wilder
- Followed by a farm meet with
- 12pm - Strawberry Stuffing Contest
- Chubby bunny style
- 12:30pm - Strawberry and Container Gardening 101
- Free class to get your garden started and a starter plant for all who join.
- 1pm - Rooftop Garden Tour
- 1:30pm - Garden Desserts 101
- Learn how to make a slew of simple and delicious dessert straight from the garden.
- Cultivate will share some favorite recipes and you'll get to sample some popsicles, chocolate-covered fruit, and much more.
- 1:30pm - Strawberry Weight Guessing Closes
- Winner announced
- 2pm - Dessert Contest
- Bring in your homemade dessert and enter in the contest for free. It can be just about anything- cake, pie, ice cream, cookies.
- A panel of local food makers will be the judges, and all participants will receive strawberry-related prizes.
- Grand prize is a $50 gift card for produce, plants or garden supplies at H St. Farms.
- 3pm - Pet Costume Contest
- 3:30pm - Closing Remarks and Raffle
- Must be present to claim prizes which will include vertical gardens, garden starter kits, Seedsheets, rare plants and much more.
