It took a second attempt (the first time I tried they had sold out to a large crowd gathered for the UEFA Champions League Final), but I was finally able to try Bubbie's Plant Burgers & Fizz. Bubbie's currently operates out of the kitchen at Rock & Roll Hotel (1353 H St NE). If you want to try their plant-based take on classic American burgers you'll need to visit on a Thursday (6–9pm), Friday or Saturday night (6–10pm). You can order from any of the bars on any floor of the Hotel. You can also now order through Bubbie's website for pick-up.
The Classic
Bubbie's comes to us from the team behind Pow Pow (1253 H St. NE), which also serves an entirely plant-based menu. I dined with a small group and was able to taste the Classic, the Monkey Wrench, the fries, and the chicken tenders. For the burgers you can choose between a veggie patty or a seitan patty. I liked both and they both held together well. You can also substitute an Impossible Burger patty for an upcharge. But honestly, Bubbie's makes their cheeses/patties/proteins (including the plant-based pork belly) in-house, so they know what they are doing.
The fries
The prices are reasonable too. Sandwiches run $7–10, and the sides are $6–9. It's worth noting that they recently added a new menu item called the Tombstone ($10). It's described on their website as "Melted cashew cheddar & plant-based pork belly bacon, buried inside a buttery brioche bun, deep fried & topped w/ powdered sugar & sweet jam drizzle." I would not be surprised if they added more items in the future. The Bubbie's team are working on securing a permanent space (I'm hoping it's on H Street NE), but it looks like they'll be serving at Rock & Roll for the foreseeable future.
The chicken tenders
The chicken tenders come with agave mustard and sesame ranch dips. The sesame predominates in the ranch, but that's definitely not a bad thing. By the time we finished our food we were already talking about what to order next time, so it's safe to say we were all big fans.
