Robbery @11th & H
WP: 2 Apprehended in Burglary on Florida Ave
The Post reports, and I can personally confirm, that two males were taken into custody during the burglary of a rowhouse in the 1200 block of Florida yesterday. Daniel Howland (18, and a Trinidad resident), and a 15 year old male (not a resident of Trinidad) were spotted by officers (who were surveying the neighborhood due to recent robberries) entering a home. The two attempted to escape with a laptop (which they then dropped), but were quickly apprehended. The burglary occurred just before 11:30 am. According to the Post, the two are suspects in as many as 13 recent burglaries in the neighborhood. Great work on the part of MPD, and also amazing timing. What are the chances of police actually happening upon a burglary in progress?

Argonaut Closed for Taxes
Here's a statement from Joe Englert:
Elise,
Argonaut was closed down tonight because of a serious miscommunication with DC Tax and Revenue.
A few weeks back, a DC Tax and Revenue officer phoned me and told me that three of my establishments owed tens of thousands of in back Sales and Use Taxes.
Because two of the establishments bank locally, I was quickly able to track down every one of the checks from periods said to be owed and cleared those accounts.
Argo banks at Bank of America. These payments were much harder to trace because of it being such a large bureacracy. We knew we owed the District money and had a payment plan worked out with them. But the total they wanted on demand, however, was very high and very wrong.
Even though we kept in daily contact with the Department and even though we were told repeatedly that we were working in compliance, they came any way and shut us down. Even more frustrating, I had told a revenue officer I was more than happy to pay off the real balance, I just didn't want to pay again for periods they claimed were never taken care of. To put it in perspective, my businesses will pay about $3 million dollars in taxes this year. I owed less than 1% of this amount, an amount in contention and got closed down any way.
To make a long story short, instead of dickering with a payment plan, we are going to pay our taxes in full tomorrow. And though I do not like how the closure went down, ultimately, it is 100% my fault. I apologize to the employees, customers and neighbors of Argonaut. Very embarassing. Thanks
----------------------------------------------------------
I was also told by a trustworthy Argonaut representative that the Argonaut paid its taxes in the form of a cashier's check.
Art on Call Volunteers Needed
The Trinidad Art on Call Project is seeking volunteers to paint five callboxes in the neighborhood. The callboxes have already been stripped and primed. We will be painting them to prepare them for the installation of pre-fabricated art by local artists. We will be out and painting from 9am-12pm this Saturday October 31st. We really need volunteers because we are on a tight schedule. Those interested are asked to sign up ahead of time by emailing the Trinidad Neighborhood Association at trinidadneighborhood@gmail.com. This is a very important permanent public art installation in our neighborhood, and a great way for local artists to gain exposure. You can also call 202-494-0607, but not before 8:30am, and not after 11pm.

New Gallery to Open in Corridor
INDUSTRY GALLERY OF 21ST CENTURY INTERNATIONAL DESIGN
TO OPEN IN JANUARY
Washington, DC Gallery Will Feature Works That Blur Boundaries Between
Experimental Art and Practical Design
October 27, 2009 (Washington, DC) - Industry Gallery, a gallery specializing in 21st century design, today announced plans to open in January 2010. Industry Gallery, based in the Atlas/H Street Historic District of Washington, DC, will focus on international artists who create functional art from industrial materials. The gallery will hold temporary, single artist exhibitions representing a broad spectrum of international design trends. A complete exhibition schedule will be announced shortly.
Industry Gallery will offer unique and limited edition works that blur the boundary between experimental art and practical design."Many of the artists I will show have works in major museums collections, and are producing pieces that are highly soughtafter by collectors in the rapidly expanding area of contemporary design," said Craig Appelbaum, director of Industry Gallery, who has been a collector and private dealer. "In the past decade the field has grown considerably as measured by the increasing number of museum exhibitions, international art fairs such as Design Miami and S.O.F.A., and attention by major international auctions houses including Christie's, Phillips and Sotheby's."
Industry Gallery will occupy 4,300 square feet at 1358 Florida Avenue, NE, in the same building as Conner Contemporary. "Conner has helped make Washington, DC a destination for contemporary art connoisseurs, collectors and curators - my intention is to make this city a destination for aficionados of design, too," said Appelbaum. In addition to single artist exhibitions, the gallery will maintain an inventory of works by noted artists such as the Campana Brothers, Shiro Kuramata, and Atelier van Lieshout.
A special event will be held in the new Industry Gallery space featuring Fixation, curated by Pinkline Project and Ten Mile Square, in conjunction with the opening of Koen Vanmechelen at Conner Contemporary on Saturday November 7, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Dig In Your Heels Nov 1st
Put on your running or walking shoes and come to the arboretum on Sunday, November 1st for the Friends of the National Arboretum’s (FONA) annual 5K race and family fun walk. For the first time, FONA is partnering with Girls on the Run to hold the event. Girls on the Run is an international non-profit organization serving preteen and adolescent girls. The DC chapter holds 12-week character building programs that culminate in a 5k race. Proceeds from the race at the arboretum will benefit the Washington Youth Garden, a program co-sponsored by FONA and the U.S. National Arboretum for inner-city children, ages nine through twelve.
The November race is the only organized running event at the arboretum. The 5K course travels along the roadways connecting the arboretum’s collections and gardens and offers glimpses of specimen trees in full fall color. Families, children and walkers can also participate in a Family Run route. Following the race there will be an awards ceremony and a local-themed Community Connection Fair and Activities tent, which will introduce event participants to local organizations and businesses that highlight health and the environment. All participants receive a free t-shirt.
Because of the number of runners expected this year, all roads on the arboretum grounds will be closed to vehicles until 11:00 a.m., except those connecting the major parking lots. The New York Avenue and R Street Gates will both be open, with participants and visitors directed to available parking. Car pools are recommended.
The 2009 Dig In Your Heels 5k starts bright and early at 9am on November 1st. This year's race is professionally certified! Sign up now to reserve your spot!
$25 pre-registration
$35 pre-registration + FONA membership

Important
Packet pickup and late registration will take place at the Georgetown Running Company (3401 M Street, NW) on Friday, October 30, from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again on Saturday, October 31, from 11:00 AM until 4 PM.
Parking
Please note that parking inside the Arboretum is extremely limited: carpooling is strongly encouraged. The 5th district police precinct has given permission to park on Bladensburg Road along the Arboretum fence until noon. Parking is also available along R Street, which is just outside the R Street gate entrance to the Arboretum. Please allow yourself enough time to park before the race!
The Washington Youth Garden is partnering with Girls on the Run--DC this year. Girls on the Run is an international non-profit serving preteen and adolescent girls. The DC chapter holds 12-week character building programs, culminating in a 5k race at the end of each program.
We are also partnering with the Washington Running Report, DC's premier racing website. Runners from all over the DC-metro area visit the Washington Running Report's website for up-to-date information on races in and around DC.
See photos from last year's Dig In Your Heels race in our photo gallery! A special thanks to our photographer, Glenda Kapsalis, for donating her time to produce these wonderful photos.
Held annually in November, Dig In Your Heels 5K and Fun Run offers something for everyone in the family. Hills challenge the avid runners, walkers stretch their legs, and a jogging juggler leads the smallest in a fitness parade! Enjoy fresh good-for-you snacks, healthy how-to's and plenty of fun fall activities as you show your support for Washington Youth Garden.

WP/Urban Turf: H Street
This article on H Street (with neighborhood boundaries) is part of a new venture between the Washington Post and Urban Turf that will cover local real estate. I think the article is good overall, but there are a couple of errors in the section where I was interviewed. I already talked to the author and he has promised to get them fixed. To be fair, the interview was over the phone, and there was background noise. Here they are the mistakes and corrections so they don't bug me:
1. I moved here in 2001, not 2003. The article makes it sound like I moved to a neighborhood and pretty much started blogging about it immediately...NOT TRUE.
And yes, I am from Oklahoma. This means that every reporter from now until dooms day will introduce me by calling me an Oklahoma native. True, but I haven't lived there in 13 years guys. Not that there's anything wrong with Oklahoma. I just think this is an odd tick that reporters seem to have. It's kind of like the way the Post is constantly using the very "snarl" constantly to talk about traffic.
2. That Craiglist thing? Happened back in 2004, so, not really so "recent" actually. This actually makes more sense if you realize it's a story from 5 years ago.

Shooting @14th & Maryland
It happened around 7:30pm (but police remained on the scene for quite a while afterward). The victim, a male who had been shot in the chest, made it to the Checkers. He was transported to the hospital.
Channel reports in its literally titled (possibly inappropriately titled story): Man Goes to Checkers After Being Shot Did Victim Seeks Aid at Checkers not get the same laughs? I don't know what's up with that title, but it seems a little off.

PEPCO Throwdown
Here's info on a series of public meeting on proposed rate increases:
1. PUBLIC HEARINGS SCHEDULED ON PEPCO'S $51.7M RATE INCREASE
Posted by: "Cynthia" cynthiahartley[at]hotmail.com sinheart68
Date: Sat Oct 17, 2009 5:32 am ((PDT))
PUBLIC NOTICE ALERT
OPC OPPOSES PEPCO'S $51.7 MILLION RATE INCREASE BID, CALLS FOR DECREASE IN PEPCO'S CURRENT RATES BY $10.4 MILLION
Dear Consumers,
The D.C. Office of the People's Counsel, your ratepayer advocate, is alerting you to Public Hearings scheduled before the D.C. Public Service Commission in Formal Case No. 1076. OPC is seeking your input on PEPCO's request for a $51.7 million increase in its electric distribution rates. OPC is calling for a $10.4 million decrease in PEPCO's current rates.
OPC is challenging components of PEPCO's request for a rate increase because the Company has not provided adequate justification to support its proposed increase.
OPC believes this case raises critical issues utility consumers face now and will face in the future.
For example,
1) PEPCO seeks to shift certain business risks from Company shareholders to consumers with no guarantee that service quality will be improved.
2) PEPCO has failed to adhere to its statutory mandate to provide District consumers safe, adequate and reliable electric service.
3) PEPCO has not detailed how consumers/ratepayers will be prepared and educated for a wave of future technologies, such as smart meters and the Smart Grid, or how the costs of these new technologies will be allocated.
OPC believes it is important for consumers to understand that this rate increase request is part of a continuing march toward higher electric bills. Residential rates over a five year period have increased by 98 %. For example, in 2004, a residential consumer paid $49.00 for 750kWh per month. Today, the same consumer will pay $97.00 per month even before PEPCO's requested rates are increased. If PEPCO's request is approved in its entirety, consumers will pay an additional $6.43 each month.
These are your dollars and your service. It is imperative that you attend at least one of the community hearings and raise your issues and voice your concerns on the public record.
To participate in the hearings, you should sign up in advance by contacting the Commission Secretary at 202-626-5150 by the close of business, at least 3 days before each hearing and ask to be placed on the public witness list.
Persons with special needs are encouraged to call the Public Service Commission in advance to assist with any arrangements to facilitate your participation.
If for any reason you are unable to attend the hearings you may submit your written testimony to be included on the public record to Ms. Dorothy Wideman, Director, Office of the Commission Secretary, DC Public Service Commission, 1333 H St. NW Washington DC, 20010. You may also send your testimony by email to dwideman@dcpsc.org.
The three community hearings will convene at the following locations on the dates specified below:

Exciting Concert @the Atlas
Please note that they have an outstanding young artist performing, and that kids under 16 are admitted free. This is a great opportunity to expose your children to a live classical performance at a low price. I imagine it will be particularly of interest if your child (or a child you know) has a musical bent.

About Fedor Ouspensky & David Grandis
Fedor Ouspensky, a 7th-grader at the Russian Embassy School in Washington, DC., started taking violin lessons at the Levine School of Music with Olga Khroulevich at age 5 and a half. He currently continues studying there with Peter Sirotin, founder of the Mendelssohn Piano Trio.
Over the past years Fedor has won many awards and honors. He has performed publicly at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; played for master classes given by prominent musicians; given solo recitals; and appeared as a soloist with orchestras.
Fedor made his first appearance with an orchestra at the age of 8 performing Accolay Concerto with the McLean Youth Orchestra; two years later he was invited back to play the Bach Concerto with the same orchestra. In 2008 he performed the entire Vivaldi A-minor Concerto with Bachanalia Chamber Orchestra in New York. Most recently, in May 2009, Fedor was featured in two performances of Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with Loudoun Symphony Orchestra.
Fedor currently holds co-concertmaster positions at the American Youth Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and McLean Youth Orchestra. He is also an active chamber musician as a member of Kong Quartet and 2Kids Duo. His groups have performed at the Merkin Hall of Kaufman Center, New York; Levine Showcase at the Greenberg Theater of the American University; World Conference of Masonic Lodges at the Scottish Rite Center; and Pentagon Memorial Fund event at the National Building Museum in Honor of the victims of 9/11. They also give many concerts at local retirement facilities.
David Grandis was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Capital City Symphony in 2008. He was recently cover conductor at the National Philharmonic in Washington, DC. In 2007, he was assistant conductor of the Baltimore Opera and of the Peabody Conservatory Opera for their productions of Tosca and of the Tales of Hoffmann.
Music director of the University of Grenoble Symphony Orchestra for the 2003/2004 season, he has also conducted many orchestras including the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nice, the National Orchestras of Toulouse and Bordeaux (France), the Philharmonic Orchestra of Minsk (Belarus), and the New Symphony Orchestra of Sofia (Bulgaria)
Napa 1015 Closing Restaurant
As many of you already know, Napa 1015 is closing the doors of its restaurant operations October 24th. I think this a huge loss to H Street, but I hope (knowing that they own their building) that they will reopen once the economy improves, and that stretch of H Street matures a bit (i.e. gets more businesses). This is a very tough time for most of us, and local restaurants and bars are really feeling the hit as people scale back.
Though I visited only occasionally (I have some budget concerns) I never felt that I overpaid at Napa, and every meal I've eaten there has been memorable. If you haven't tried them yet, you might want to check them out before they close. And if you are a regular, I don't need to tell you to reserve a night for a last visit. The good news is that they will continue to operate the catering portion of their business. You can learn more about that from their website. Napa's food is excellent. Please consider them for your next special event.

As someone who has worked (but doesn't currently) in the food service industry on H Street, you might also consider tossing your server a couple of dollars extra. With the tight economy, new work doesn't come as easy as it once did (and servers really do work much harder than it appears for their tips).

Unik Style Robbed @Gunpoint
Unik Style is a clothing store. I'm not sure if there are two reports because they robbed the place and the employee (or a customer, or maybe just an amended report for a single robbery), or what. But here they are:

Shooting on 10th Street
I was standing in the alley talking with some neighbors when we noticed a 1-D patrol car roll past us. That seemed odd because we live in 5-D. Then we started getting calls about cop cars zooming the wrong way up one way streets, and we figured they had to be looking for someone. I think this text alert explains it:

DEA @Bladensburg Methadone Clinic
I have an unofficial report that there are DEA agents doing something at the methadone clinic on Bladensburg Road. Apparently there are also Federal Marshalls on site. My source says it looks like an eviction, and speculates that DEA may be on hand to secure the methadone.
I have confirmed that the clinic has been evicted. To my knowledge this means the only other functioning methadone clinic in the District is on NY Ave in the Shaw area. I have also confirmed that clinic reps were on hand to refer patients to other locations. I have not yet learned the reason for the eviction.

The reason was non-payment of rent. Apparently relevant agencies came into remove confidential data (including anything on computers) prior to the eviction. This is good news because some neighborhood residents and passing motorists were seen scooping up computers and office equipment from outside the clinic.

Also Last Night
Man on bike shot and killed about 9:30pm in the 1500 block of Benning Road.
The 61 year old woman who was hit by a Metrobus yesterday has died.
And I had isolated reports of a helicopter and a fire late last night and early this morning.

Pedestrian Hit By Bus in Trinidad
A bus struck a pedestrian near Montello and Mt. Olivet Road about 6:30 tonight. No word in the Post on the victim's condition, but I heard from a source that she was not breathing. Fox News says she was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries. Apparently she had just gotten off the D8, and was attempting to cross the street when a second Metro Bus hit her.

Closing the Alley Behind Wheatley
I just finished a walk with friends that included the alley behind the Wheatley school. Here's the deal:
1. kids cross the alley through a school door (that leads directly into the alley) to get to the adjacent Joe Cole Rec Center.
2. idiots speed through the alley and might hit the kids (FYI, the Rec has nightime events).
3. you can't put up jersey barriers because trash collection/construction crews still need to get through.
4. the far side of the alley has two secondary street access points, so closing that portion shouldn't cause a problem.
With this in mind, I say that we need (A) a sign saying that portion of the alley is closed; (B) a gate, or other movable barrier that allows for necessary access, but blocks most people from coming in.
This isn't just a rant. I have already spoken to a rep from the Councilmember's office, and will email the post and comments. So please do comment, because the comments are going somewhere.

Homicide @16th and K
From the 5D listserv:
Today at approximately 5:30pm members of the Fifth District responded to 16th and K street ne for the report of a shooting. Once on the scene an adult male subject was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. It was reported that a black male suspect approached the victim as he stood in the block, the suspect produced a hadngun and shot the victim several times. The victim later died as a result of the shooting. If anyone has any information relative to this homicide please call 202 727 9099 immediately.
Mapquest was puzzled by the query, and tried to steer me to NW, but this map should give the approx location (right at Bladensburg Road and K). This is just over the boundary in Carver Terrace.
WBJ: H Street Mention
The Washington Business Journal notes that DC is a hot spot for the post college set and H Street gets a mention.
Souk
I don't know what it is for, but a sign recently appeared at 1208 H Street that reads "Souk." The rolldown has also been painted red. Assuming that I got the spelling right, souk means market.
