I don't think they've entirely shut down. They always had very strange hours (pretty much by appointment only during the day). Sanctuary was never exactly a regular art gallery. I was last inside Sanctuary in late October/early November of last year. You can see that in this photo (snapped within the last week or so) that the metal gate that usually covers the window was not closed...maybe someone was inside?
Oh. My impression, based on what I saw on the website, is that this place becomes a sort of club/afterhours spot on Friday and Saturday nights. The website lists a DJ lineup for those nights and says it's open until 5 am (typical for an afterhours place). Is that right? If so, I'm wondering if anyone knows if those events are still being held on Friday and Saturday nights.
Whoa, Can they do that? I thought you needed a special license to operate as a club/nite spot with DJ's, music, etc. Do they serve food and/or alcohol on these Friday nights? If so, it's not an art gallery and needs to obtain the appropriate licenses. I must say, I don't think I have ever lived anywhere where the law was flouted as much as here in DC.
I can neither confirm, nor deny the service of alcohol. I was there for a poetry reading (no food or drink of any kind was offered). I don't know what kind (I assume you would need something) for a dj spinning music. I don't know if the place still operates at all. I just know they were still open as of last October. I guess you could call, or stroll down there this weekend (the street won't be deserted since Rose's Dream is open). To be honest, Sanctuary looks closed even when it is open because of how the walls are (not much light escaping).

I have confirmation that they are still operating. It is an occasional operation. Mostly they just do Friday & Saturday nights every so often.
