Post Article of Interest

Here's an article from the Post that I think is worth a read. Although the article focuses on Columbia Heights, it is more generally about the race/class issues that often rise to the surface in neighborhoods undergoing change (particularly those experiencing gentrification).

You know, when I read the yahoo group for MPD-5D and articles like this I wonder if I'm blind, lucky, or what? My street in Trinidad (1400 block Orren) seems pretty peaceful so far. Yet property values don't touch these other neighborhoods. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I think one of the things that saves our little part of Trinidad (I'm on Florida) is that Black's supermarket doesn't sell alcohol. It keeps the neighborhood a bit quieter. I've noticed that there are usually people hanging around the liquor store on Florida and Montello.

Even so, our property values are starting to rise as well. A house on Florida sold for a half million a month or so ago.

power to that woman though. damn. mt pleasant has way stranger dynamics at play than those of use in hoods further east.

Montello/12th and Florida definitely make me more uneasy than Florida east of 13th. It's usually pretty quiet, perhaps owing to BSM and the fire department as well.

I've been at Florida and 'eye' for about a year, and I've found that, when compared to my boyfriend's time spent in Columbia Heights, we have much more of a neighborhood. I get the feeling that people know me as part of the neighborhood when walking around alone, so don't feel very threatened.

Two things about property values: I will be interested to see what happens when the condos at 12th and K are finished, and there is a house around Florida and 11th, I think, that is listed for $740,000. As houses are renovated, property values will continue to go up. Proximity to the metro station (NY AVE) and H street development will make a difference, which is why I think our end of the corridor hasn't yet, but will, see them rise more in the next couple years.

Can you elaborate, Scenic Artisan? I'm not all that familiar with Mount Pleasant apart from watching the riots on TV 13 years ago.

Here's an article from the Washington Business Journal on more money being allocated to streetscape improvements (including H Street).
