Cohen Demolition on K Street

P1010144
I heard this weekend that demolition has begun in preparation for Ronald Cohen's controversial project on K Street. I heard the buildings shown above were still standing as of Saturday night, but they may have come down by now. Mr. Cohen, who has encountered opposition from plenty of local neighbors, is planning to build a $250 million, 875000-square-foot, mixed-use project on the site. Here are some photos of the site that I took last spring.

They have started tearing down the properties this past weekend. I live one block south of the area and was surprised to see the church already down on Sunday. They were in operation this morning around 7:00.

This is about 2nd & K. Follow the link about for the rest of the photos. In recent months the area has been fence. My photo are (obvioulsy) before they fenced things off & hauled away the trash from out back.

I noticed, just a few blocks away, that they finally have a fence back around the property at 3rd and H, where the old gas station used to be. Have anyone heard any rumors on whether they were able to get approval on the rumored Harris Teeter construction?

At last, Cohen is at least knocking down the dilapidated & partially burned out buildings! They have been a haven for drug use, cooking meth and other nefarious activities for way too long.

Hopefully the ANC will turn a critical eye on Cohen's proposed development and carefully scrutinize the fit with the neighborhood.

I'm inclined to suggest that the ANC include recommendations such as fencing, prompt demolition of abandoned buildings, lawn maintenance, etc. when it comments on proposed developments. (though too often buildings are demolished much too quickly and without a thought) Cohen has certainly proved a lesson on the need for these type of requirements.
