P1010160
The Argonaut will open its 2nd floor (loungier with lots of windows & a dart board in the back) to the general public on Friday. The opening comes just in time for the Argo's 1st anniversary party (Saturday Aug 19th). 1453 H Street.

I just hope it makes it to its second anniversary...but I'm not terribly hopeful.

I think the Argonaut will do fine. Right now many people are checking out the other two new bars & this has likely siphoned off a bit of business from the Argonaut. However, the Argonaut is much more of a neighborhood type place & would probably not be as much of a draw (not because it isn't a great tavern, but because it doesn't have the distinctive identity of Palace of Wonders) for someone outside the neighborhood. But the Argonaut has the largest food menu & the potential for the best outdoor seating (once the permits come through). Keep in mind how impressive the Argonaut's progress is so far, considering its location.

The bar has definitely had its troubles but I'm pretty sure it will make it through. I think the two new bars will actually bring business to Argo since more people are coming into the area to check out Palace of Wonders and Red & Black (if all the articles and blogs are any indication). I'm just happy the area is getting better :)

agreed. More foot traffic helps them all & I think the other two bars will do more to bring in outsiders & pump up the area. I just meant that I think you have a temporary situation where people from around here who only went to the Argonaut & checking out the new places (because they are new) instead of the Argonaut.

I am hopeful for the Argonaut. What has struck me, consistently, about the place is that it feels like a neighborhood bar that appeals to a very broad range of the people in our community-- after all, what's not to love about a smoky dive bar?

A dart board on the 2nd floor?...at last, a dart board.

People go to areas of town--Adams-Morgan, Georgetown, South of Dupont, Capitol Hill to have fun or have an evening out.
H Street is increasingly becoming a destination. The more places that open, the more interesting it is to the public. Argonaut is a 1st year business. It peaked in May and then was hit hard when the Galludet students left town. Also, the problems with the city left it with no patio. And everybody knows how popular patios are with patros in the district.
We will have a patio soon, students will be back, Redskins and NFL will be on the tube. Word of mouth continues to spread about how wonderful Chef Shannon and her food are. The Atlas and RnR Hotel will bring hundreds of hungry and thirsty patrons our way. The stars are aligning: Argonaut is on the cusp of something big.

PS--I agree with many of the people above. I love it when the place is filled with a variety of neighborhood characters. It is nice to see a place frequented with young and old, black and white, gay and straight, hearing and non-hearing folks. I pray that H will continue to be so diverse and so enjoyable. Many thanks to all the fine people who got us to our year anniversary

So will Argonaut have a patio soon? I talked to a bartender a couple of weeks ago over there who seemed doubtful it would happen. I know I'll be visiting more frequently if it does!

The Argo is an excellent neighborhood bar! The menu infusion was a much needed improvement. I am a huge fan of a place that I can walk to, enjoy a bite and a drink or two on any given week night. Congratulations on the one year mark!

I think it's going to be fine. If you're reading Mr. Englert, the green *has* grown on me. I'm sure Monday is one of the more popular nights but it always seems that most of the tables are filled w/ hamburger munching patrons. The food's tasty, the location's good, what's not to like.

The Argo has the better menu by far of the newer joints (those cubano sandwiches are great!). I hope R&B and HoW expand a bit but, so long as their menus are limited, folks will venture east. Not sure about the patio, though. The view is sort of DMZ-chic. But if it means I'll escape the smoke and the too-loud music, I'll sit outside and stare at the funeral home!

Oops, I meant PoW!
